How do you make your saddles, Arielle? I ordered a few, but now I need one more and don't want to spend the $. What do you use for straps? I don't think I have any elastic. Maybe I can cut something up....

Sorry for the delay. Making chicken saddles, buying grain, running to the library. To make the saddles I found this site with very good sewing instructions. I do buy the fusable lining to stiffen and strengthen, but it's not absolutely necessary. YOu could skip that step. In place of elastic, perhaps sew thin strips the size of 1/4 inch elastic, or old shoe laces, soft twine maybe. I had the snaps from past projects (20 years ago) and my son suggested buttons. Using a loop type button hole(hand sewn). The tiny snaps are not holding well on all the chicken saddles. Maybe it depends on how rough the roosters are. I dont know why some are staying on fine and others are off, or half off.

I have been desperately tryin to catch up..but with 2 kids a dog and 3 chickens (and one broken homemade incubator) plus trying to find enough eggs...I just can't. I peruse though. I'm so excited for you kathyinmo, I want to hatch an emu egg so bad! Just because its exciting. Can't wait for more pics. BTW...I'm waiting on a local breeder for some turkey eggs still. They'll be set late today or early tomorrow depending on when she finally gets back to me.

I was asked a question via email about the Brinsea Mini Advance EX and Duck Eggs.

I don't have experience with this so thought I would ask here since some on this thread hatch Ducks:

Thank you so much for the advice and the coupon code Ron, I really appriciate it. I'm seriously considering the mini advanve ex model. Im just a little worried about the size capacity. would you or anyone else know if I could fit a 3 inch long chunky duck egg in to something like that? How does it automatically turn the eggs?

Thanks for helping

I have hatched call ducks in my MiniAdvance EX. I have also hatched Jersery Giant chicken eggs, really large ones, in it. Duck eggs will fit. I highly recommend the MiniAdvance EX models for small quantities of eggs.

The eggs are on their sides and the turning plate under the eggs rolls them. You set the controls to turn them, and with the AdvanceEX model, reset the control at lockdown to stop turning. You can set turning "angle" and interval (how often).

Hi everyone.... just getting caught up.

Kathy.. CONGRATS on the Emu on the way. I am jealous, I had 1 egg and had to toss it Friday, it started to stink.

Deciding if I should just try to buy some day olds.

Kathy, how's it going?

Bucka... I use long acting horse spray every time I clean the coop and nesting boxes - spray it in the crevices around the roost, on the floor/wall crevices and in the nesting boxes - I think it's called EX Shield.

I'd like to think that it helps.

Thanks! I'm going to look into that.

I could never hatch emus, since just looking at photos of Kathy's hatch has me holding my breath!

Well I almost have enough eggs to fill the bator... just need 5 more

. I'll have to set my eggs early but I've been given the ok to participate still.

My Duck gave me another egg this morning... which ended up going in the dog's food. Looks like they will be getting a lot of duck eggs until this time next year.

On the other hand I think I might have all of my extra roosters sold. YAY! My son has helped me take care of the chickens since they were chicks so he will be keeping the money from the roosters to help buy his 4-H rabbit. The woman wants my frizzle roo also but I just can't let him go.

Kathy- Congrats on the Emus! Can't wait to see pics after they get out.

Been trying to post in here for an hour. So frustrating.

All caught up and Kathy I'm so excited for you! I've wanted to hatch out Emu for years now and although I can't keep one yet, I think I have to do it now.

OH and the Yoda egg?? Awsome!
