Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I might have more eggs than will fit in my turner, but some are shipped and need to sit still which means I won't have to waste valuable space with that pesky turner

...Let the tetris begin.

Thanks for the info, Laree. I want to see the pics! I'm sure it is really cool. Speaking of emus, can they free range and will they come home to roost like chickens and other puultry? We have 23 acres and it is surrounded by tree farmed deer hunting land. As long as they didn't go too far, I could build a smaller pen and just let them out like I do all the other critters.

Wow, now I know what people mean when they have 200+ post to catch up on. It was worth it though. One of our Nigerian Dwarf does had FIVE kids today!

For an idea of their size, (my wife is 5'2" (really 5"1', but ....)

And of course there was an audience in the cheap seats, but with a birds eye view

For those of you willing to help me figure out what I am doing wrong in the incubation process...please feel free to comment, at this rate, my easter hatch is not looking soo good.

So I removed all 40 eggs from the bator today and did an eggtopsy on 10 of them. 6 of them had very little development, two I saw no signs of development and one was not quite as far along as the last which is pictured below. I was hoping to pinpoint a time when something went wrong but with various stages of development that makes it pretty hard. As you can see from the picture this one looked like it make it atleast to day 18??? Soooooooo sad...40 some chickie lives wasted on my incubating failure. AGAIN! This time I tried the dry hatch, which I am going to do again. It is only my third hatch but this one and the last one resulted in no chicks. The first one I had a 50% hatch. The only thing I can figure out that is different is that I did take the space heater out after the first one because it is soo much warmer now, but it will be going back in. Any ideas?

OK, never mind on the picture, I couldn't get it to load, but it was a pretty well developed chick.

Cayuse, what kind of thermometers have you got? I'm wondering if they are sealed. I'm also wondering if you have compared them with your house's thermostat to see if they are accurate? I'm thinking maybe your temps are a bit off, and it's just enough to have an issue.

Also, if there isn't enough turning done early on, it can't sustain itself well later on. I had a turner quit on me once and it took forever for me to notice it.
