Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I found these on the last Easter Hatchalong (they had a Tetris contest!) There are other pictures that are in the search results, but I thought these were the best ones so far!

Mahonri, hope you are recovering well - I dumped hot oil on my leg when I was in college, and the recovery process was not fun

Whoever asked about emus free ranging, the answer is NO - they will disappear and you will have people calling from all over about the dinosaur birds running loose.

My advice for hatchers is that if you are using a thermometer or a hygrometer, calibrate it first.

Thermometer - If it is sealed and goes to 212 degrees, test it with water that is boiling as you test it. If not, compare it to a thermometer that can be tested (like a kitchen thermometer) by putting them next to each other for a while. Make a note of how far off the thermometer is from accurate, and add or subtract that to the number you read to give you the actual temp. Most thermometers have a +/_ accuracy of at least 2 degrees, which means they can be far enough off to affect your hatch. And 3 inaccurate thermometers are no better than one innacurate one.

Hygrometer - the best way is to test them using the salt method, there are several threads that talk about this. It is easy, inexpensive, and takes little time. Again, make a note of how far off your hygrometer is, and add or subtract that number to give you the actual reading.
Great tip! Remember to adjust boiling point for altitude. Those of us at higher altitudes know what I am talking about

Maybe some Lemon Cuckoo Marans and RIR would make nice barred chicks...

I'm just trying to help him decide to build another coop.

Besides, who doesn't want some lovely blue and green eggs? With a very high chance of barring in the chicks?

My neighbor wants a cross breed of my RIR roo and BA hen, so we're swaping the chicks before my dad catches wind. Plus this goes towards my breeding project. I want barred RIRs.

Making rhodbars would be a long term project. Wait six months and get some from Cheryl Cochen. It took a long time to get the Rhodebars stable and auto sexing. If it were easy, we would have them here.

Sounds fun though

HI EVERYONE WELL I AM SO READY TO SET AS OF NOW I HAVE 42 EGGS COMMING IF I WIN THIS AUCTION ON HERE MY AMOUNT WILL DOUBLE MY QUESTION IS IF I GET MORE THAT MY 2 TURNERS CAN HOLD HOW DO I STACK THEM SO THE EGGS DO NOT GET MESSED UP OR ROOL AROUND. I WILL BE HATCHING ALL SILKIES.

Here is a picture that will show you.

Not my picture. From this post.

Might you have some eggs for after this hatch? I would love to throw some in with my BR eggs and have a mix. C'mon SCG, we can do a turkey hatch after this one!
Me, toooooooo! I need turkey eggs. Anyone in the center of the country have some? Actually, the farther they have to go, the better my shipped eggs are, as they are on a quick flight rather than a long truck ride. It took eggs I shipped to Tazcat70 3+ days to arrive, and she's 3.5 HOURS away...and they all flopped but one. I ship eggs to Alaska and they're there in 14 hours, 90% hatch. Go figure.

Plane rides are more gentle.

Thermometers sealed? Whats that lol. I have three different types of thermometers. An acurite (which has been the one with the most fluctuations) the one that came with the incubator (which was pretty consistent except during lockdown) and one that I don't know what the name is but is round looks like a clock. It is always the highest. Also, I have an IR Thermometer which I use to "check" temp. It is usually at the 99 degree in the middle of those 3. I could take them all out of the bator now and see what I get room temp. But I was also just thinking of going to walmart and getting the cheapies you have on your cheat sheet.

About your comment on not turning....Based on that, what are your thoughts on not turning shipped eggs? And what if some of your eggs are not shipped?

Oh what a mess.... the variables...... the stress........ ChooksChick, you want to move in with me for the next 3 weeks?
(oh and bring your bators)

Ha! I'm actually going to be a bit neurotic on this one, because my FarmGirl incubator is not quite stable with the temps outside having skyrocketed this week. It'll be in the 80s all week, when less than 2 weeks ago it was in the single digits. LOVE Kansas weather. I'm just a keyboard away!!

HI EVERYONE I NEED HELP IF SOMEONE HAS ANY PICTURES OF STACKIN EGG IN A INCUBATOR COULD YOU PLEASE POST THEM I HAVE 110 EGGS COMMING TO ME THATS NOT INCLUDING ANY EXTRAS AND I ONLY HAVE 2 INCUBATORS AND TWO TURNERS WHICH THE TURNERS ONLY HOLD 42 EGGS EACH I AM TRYING TO BORROW A INCUBATOR FROM MY COUSIN BUT THERE IS NO TURNER WITH IT AND I WORK DURING THE DAY AND IT WOULD MAKE IT HARD TO TURN THE ONES IN THE THIRD INCUBATOR LIKE I SHOULD THEY WOULD GO FOR 8 HRS WITHOUT TURNING ON MONDAY, THURSDAY, ON TUESDAY THEY WILL GO WITHOUT TURNING FOR 10 HRS AND ON WENDSDAY FOR 9 HRS BUT ON FRIDAY SAT AND SUNDAY I CAN TURN LIKE I AM SUPPOSE TO SO I WOULD LIKE TO TRY AND STACK THE EXTRAS SO THEY GET TURNED WHILE I AM AT WORK AND HOPEFULLY NOT GO TO WASTE BUT I AM NOT SURE HOW. I WAS WANTING TO GET THE POLISH EGGS SOMEONE OFFERED ON HERE BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO BECAUSE I THOUGHT I ONLY HAD ENOUGH ROOM FOR 3 MORE EGGS COME TO FIND OUT I MISS COUNTED AND HAVE WAY MORE EGGS THAN MY TURNERS WILL HOLD. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ON HOW I CAN INCUBATE ALL THE EXTRA EGGS SO THEY WILL NOT GO TO WASTE.

AAAAgh!! My eyes are bleeding after this!! All caps hurts me.

Woo hoo! The drive in to work this morning was "interesting!"
1). Last night's news mentioned people driving over the passes in snow, using their cruise control - are they nucking ffutz? But apparently some of those same folks were on the road with me this morning.
2). What are those people thinking when they pull into the space between my car and those ahead of me?! That's for SAFETY, you mororns!
3). I need a faster speed on my windshield wipers. Something more akin to "Noah's Flood" rain levels. Wipety-wipe isn't sufficient during some of the downpours.
4). I lost count of the number of times cars which had moved into my "safe stopping distance" space suddenly veered off to the right AND, horrifyingly, to the LEFT when traffic ahead slowed or stopped.

And I'm caught up here.
