Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Mahonri, I have had a few bad sunburns in the past- reulting in sun poisoning. On those I usually use Listerine on a cotton ball. It coats and is antiseptic but helps take the pain out. However, I would not even attempt putting it on the parts of the burn with raw open wounds. Just a suggestion. Warning: it does sting slightly but not any worse that an antiseptic wipe on a cut.

yay easter hatch! *isa wee bit excited over here)

Me too. I am bordering on obsessive.

Looks great! I have not seen pics since you moved. I followed that thread (was it last year?) and was jealous that you have so many BYC buddies close enough to meet for coffee on a regular basis, remember?

OK, I have been talking with my mom and I may be able to get a cat!!!!!!!!!!

the Reason for the cat is we have been having a bad vole/mice and rat problem. our Fields are being taken care of by an old farmer Friend and the fields were hey fields but the last few years he has been growing corn and leaves the corn in the fields to dry, sometimes he can't harvests it till spring. we never had voles/rats till he started growing corn and the voles are eating everything that we are trying to grow!!!!!!!!!!

we have tried all kinds of traps and nothing in the traps!!!!!!!!!!!! my dad had to start shooting the rats and got them all, but now they are BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tripped over one tonight when I was doing something, not a good site to see !!!!!!!!!!

they are getting bolder and bolder every day now. SO I HAVE A FEW Qs, do any of you have indoor/outdoor cats or barn cats??? how did you get them to NOT go after the poultry??? I am thinking of getting one from a shelter because they have up to date shots and sometimes they are fixed, RIGHT?????? and I know there are a lot of cats that need a a good home at the shelters. have any of you adopted a cat form a shelter?? I need the cat to stay around so what is a good age for a cat ?? male or female ?? if it's an outdoor cat only, how do I keep the cat to stay around and not have the cat take off ?? or does it need to be indoors first?? I really want the cat to be indoor/outdoors but will have to see what my mom says. that is why I am asking the Qs, to know what I need to do. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Java - the best mousers are the kittens of true barn cats. See if you can find a horse farm nearby annd let them know that you need a kitten. Get it a little older than you normally would so that it will have had a chance to start hunting on it's own some but make sure it has been handled and is tame. Fix it a good warm bed in a barn or in the garage near the fields so that it will spend it's time where you want/need it to be. It will mean you have to take care of the shots, neutering and other vet stuff, but will assure a better mouser. Not all cats are good at it or even act on the instinct if their mother didn't teach them.

Mahonri -- prayers for you, nothing else is needed (except maybe that silver med, evidently .... lol!)

I've got a BYC friend, Longview, coming over so I don't have much time but I want to comment on this. Shelters in my area would not let me adopt a cat that was going to be an outside cat. My husband is allergic to cats so no inside cats are possible. I used to use poison in the barn when I had horses to keep the mice at bay but once the horses left and I got chickens, I didn't want them finding dead mice and possibly eating them so wanted a couple of barn cats to take care of them. One of the shelters did recommend a place that catches wild cats, neuters them, vaccinates them and tries to find homes for them where they are not expected to be pets. I adopted a 3-4 year old female and a 10 month old male that were kept in my barn (in my chicken tractor that I use to raise my meat birds in each year) for the month of March last year. Then I opened the door on the tractor to let them roam in the barn but they could not get outside. I fed them in the tractor so they would go into it to eat and then I would close the door if I needed to do things in the barn that required me to have the big doors open. After two weeks of that, I needed the chicken tractor and made up a box for them to sleep in, moved the litter box out of the tractor but left it in the same place it was and everything was fine. They accepted the barn as their home. I do feed them each night and lock them in the barn. We have coyotes, owls and who knows what else out at night that could kill them so they are locked in the barn with the chickens. The chicken part of the barn is separated by a plastic snow fence divider so the cats can not go into that part at night, they can get in there during the day when the chickens free-range and the doors are opened at the other end for the cats to go out. My momma hens protect the chicks. They are out with the rest around a week old. The cats learned early not to mess with the chickens, mine will not run from them, they stand-up to them, even going into the other end of the barn to eat the cat food is the cats leave any. Here are a couple of pics I took this week........what timing that you asked about this.......I haven't taken any pics of them since last fall!! See if you have a "feral" or "wild" cat rescue near you. My two were free....I did make a donation to the rescue but it was not a requirement for adoption.

Here is Boyd with two of my Icelandics. You can see he is more concerned with them jumping on him than they are worried about him! He is the more friendly and will follow me around when I'm outside. I can pet him when I feed them at night and could catch him if I wanted to.

Here is Sarabi using the barn door opening as a "scratching post". She is the better hunter of the two. Does not like to be touched but will not run away at the sight of people like she did when we first got her. She is a beautiful cat.

silvadene is expensive, BECAUSE, I would have to.

1. take time off to see a
2. DOCTOR... who charges an office visit $100+ (not covered at all on my ins. plan) to write out the scrip, and pray you don't pick up an infection there because they are almost as bad as hospitals.
3. then you have to find a pharmacy that doesn't try to rip you off. They do that here in AZ. Often we have to ask, "Is it cheaper using insurance or not, Unbelievably, when we ask that question, more often than not, it's cheaper not to use insurance! and... No fredmeyer in the downtown Phoenix area.

I seriously doubt I could even get in to see a doctor on my day off tomorrow, but I'll try because if it will take the pain away it will be worth it.

Oh for heaven's sake. Write me a script, and I will go pick it up. I have this huge burn in my mouth from pizza. It's all over the front of my face too. Like Silence of the Lambs. I need silvadene.
