Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Kathy with DH out of town, no corned beef for me today. I don't do cooked cabbage, but I do love corned beef. Oh well, maybe we will have corned beef and birthday cake when he gets home. For me, just a small pork roast and use the leftovers for lunch next week. You having the traditional dinner?

Oh yes! I love it ! Lots and lots of it......

Can I still join? I just got my eggs from Wynette yesterday. One other problem is, I'm at work and can't set my eggs until around 6pm. I will end up being a late start. But if I'm able to join I have 9 Olive Eggs.
Thanks Michele

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I'm trying not to panic, still adjusting my new Brinsea. It was just a little cool, so I turned it up and now have every thermometer in the entire house crammed in there! I hope it isn't too hot now.

I will post what I am setting as soon as I go out and collect this morning's eggs (I might cram in a few extras).

Help! I can't stop looking at this thread!!! agggghhhh. my house is a mess, my kids are sick...i'm sick..and can't stop following this thread. And on top of it, I can't stop looking at my eggs. Still working on the bators.

HA! Are you looking in MY windows? My DH has taken to making faces because I am at the computer every time he looks at me! I came down with a cold (or bronchitis, or flu, or sinus infection or whatever it is) last Friday and have been off work all week. The house looks like hoarders live here. Last night I took DH by the hand and led him into the dining room to show him the eggs, he said, "okay." and looked at me blankly.

Theres lots of great duck people. Try hatch day is today, we kind of specialize in ducks over there.

Marty is right, I poped over there for some quick info on ducks and they were most helpful (especially Marty, Thanks!)

GAAAHHHHH I finally finished my egg art and want to post it, who knew that it would take me 4 hours, several trips to the router a one hour phone call with the ISP and a service call set for tomorrow.

I can't get the pic to post, lets see if you can get to it from the link

I LOVE it! I would like to see more....might even try one of my own while I'm waiting.......

ORDER THE BATOR.

And until then, use duct tape to close in the leaky areas!

Then you'll have room for more eggs, or a hatcher!

Oh on a side note. For all of you trying to help me succeed with a hatch...

1) incubator has held at 99.8 steady for 3 days no variation at all.
2) humidity is 27 empty will it go up with eggs in it? Will that be too low for dry hatch?
3) I could not find a water weasel, I looked at 2 walmarts, toys r us, party galaxie, dollar general and the science museum someone assured me had them. I will probably find them Easter Sunday. Instead I put water in 2 ziplocks and put a thermometer between, surprisingly this is just a shade warmer. Right at 100. Any thoughts on that?
4) air cells on shipped eggs. I was surprised to see that most looked pretty good. I had a couple that were not as perfectly round, but where they should be. Still leave the turner off?
5) yippee, ordered the brinsea spot check thermometer and it's on it's way. Won't be here by tomorrow though.

No matter what, the eggs go in tomorrow, please, please, please let it work this time!

Make sure to send a note to Brinsea and let them know that you ordered the Spot Check for this hatch, I plan to do the same, later today! I want them to know how much we appreciate the donation they made.

What? (or do I want to know....?)

And what are you using for a thermostat?

Sorry, now I'm worrying about other's homemade bators!

I have two of them that came with the bator I got last year and the 3rd one is a small outdoor one that I got last year as well. everything that I listed was stuff I had laying around

because we really can't buy anything right now that is not of the most importance. the two that came with the bater likes to drive me crazy!!!!!!!!!

but I kind of figured them out.

Hey Java! I think you are telling about your thermometers, and I think Mahonri was asking about Thermostats..... just sayin'....

Is a candler required equipment? I don't have one.
Plus our eggs are fairly thick shelled and brown- will one even work on those?

Yes, a candler is required equipment. It is the only thing that will keep you sane for the next 21 days! The good news is, it doesn't have to be expensive.

I agree with featherz here. If you just get a real high lumens LED flashlight (like over 100 lumens) it will work. The "mag-light" size works pretty good. It is not necessary to candle, but it does help to get the ones that are not going to hatch out before you go into lockdown. You definitely don't have to have an "actual" candler. I have a spotlight that I put the rubber bottom of a plumber's helper on to "focus" the light on the egg. That is my candler.

ETA - my "redneck" candler

I Love it! But I hope you use a "dedicated" plunger cup and not the dual purpose kind..........

Today's the day!!!! I was able to be patient enough. Yay. Woke up to my hummidity being 39 in the bator. Finally got it dropped down from the 60's.

My humidity is running around 16 - 20% with no water. If I add water to the tray, it will bring it up to 30 - 35% but won't stay there long. I sure hope I can get it high enough at lockdown.....

I will try the sponges in the water tray and the damp paper towels on the wire, are there any other tricks?

Yes, Please join us!! We know not everyone is able to be at home setting their eggs at noon!! That is a target but may need to be adjusted to each individual's life!
