Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I've been up since 330. Yawn. :)

That's when I went to bed...and I got up again at 7:30. Feeling GREAT!! (try not to get burned by the acidic tone of facetiousness here...)

I got the silvadene and put it on yesterday afternoon. It doesn't make it feel any different to me. I hope it works.

I thought the white smears looked a bit metallic in the pics. FYI, put the Silvadene (SSD) lightly on gauze and tape it on, giving wide berth and NOT getting tape near the burns. Use paper tape, and tape gauze together if need be. This will keep it clean and help you apply the SSD without smearing off skin. Keeping them covered protects them from bumps and scrapes. Change dressing daily or as needed. Sorry about the pain. I try to cope with it by remembering it's just electrical signals- helps me ignore them.

Boo just checked the "tracking" on those eggs. They are still reporting that they are in KS. No updates since the 15th. Well they will either be here today or not.

I'm going down there to see what's up. I don't understand how one box of 16 could still be here. This makes no sense. Of course Melissa Rose's box is a replacement because 3 I shipped over a week ago went missing...I wonder if anyone at the local PO is a poultry enthusiast? Nah, not worth federal prison. Didi, yours are insured. If they stay missing I'll file a claim. If they don't have an answer I'm mailing you a replacement today with something you'll like.

Kathy you are on! The variety sounds very pretty. I will PM you to discuss.

Well now I understand why everyone goes nuts with the styrofoam bators. The one I picked up yesterday I have stabilized between 98 and 100 (using my Spot Check) but it took many tweaks to get it there. Not much movement on the knob brings big differences in the temps. WOW Thank goodness for all the good advice I have read on these bators on this site. The "reference" temp gague for the bator reads only 91 degrees. No wonder so many people cook their eggs with them.

Hatching HInt: Get a dimmer knob and slide it over the temp 'stick' on LG incubators for a simpler fine-tuning. DON'T do this when in use. If the knob doesn't fit properly you'll inadvertently change your temps. You may need to try more than one knob.

Did I already say this one?

Wow, we might just make it to 250 today!

At this rate, we could have a huge jump to 294- one for each egg in Kathy's Sportsman!

I agree with featherz here. If you just get a real high lumens LED flashlight (like over 100 lumens) it will work. The "mag-light" size works pretty good. It is not necessary to candle, but it does help to get the ones that are not going to hatch out before you go into lockdown. You definitely don't have to have an "actual" candler. I have a spotlight that I put the rubber bottom of a plumber's helper on to "focus" the light on the egg. That is my candler.

ETA - my "redneck" candler

I'm seeing an entry for ingenious invention. Chicken-genuity.

I bought an LED Lenser at Home Depot. $50. Not cheap but I can candle most Marans.

This from the man who waited a week to buy the proper meds to heal a portion of his body that now looks like steak. You got your chicken priorities straight, son!

Happy Day

These are Bantam Polish Frizzles that just hatched

Thank goodness! I was starting to really think none of the eggs would get there on time!

Yes, Please join us!! We know not everyone is able to be at home setting pressing their eggs noses to the incubator window at noon!! That is a target but may need to be adjusted to each individual's life! obsession.

Heehee!

There are small holes in the bottom of the Hovabator (stryro) that I assume are the air intake vents. There are 12 and each is about 1/4" diameter. Has anyone tried setting the whole bator in a shallow pan of water and using something to hold it just above the water's surface? I would think that would draw water vapor up through the holes and increase humidity. What do you all think?

Could work! You could set it on a cookie sheet full of water. I think it woud be wide enough to straddle the water and thus reap increased humidity levels. It may only be slight, but that makes the difference in my orchids.

Sheesh, I do a multi quote to catch up on the 4 hours I slept and there's more to comment on by the time I finish! Wow!
Please tell me I'm not the only guy in this egg hatch?? But I'm use to that being that I'm in the nursing profession! lol And I get grief all the time from my wife for "wasting time" tending to the chickens so all you gals out there I feel for u when you get grief from ur hubbies. lol

What do you call Mahonri?!?

(with sincere apologies to our friends in Alaska, Canada, Europe and Australia for not being included)

THIS IS AWESOME!

This is really cool!

HH, (As you look at the imaginary swinging pocket watch in front of your face and read in a slow monotone manner) What you should do is post here that you are in and PM Mahonri to put you on the list. Then tomorrow at noon your time, put the eggs that you have collected, plus the ones you get in the morning (and afternoon for that matter) into the incubator. If you have a broody during the 21 days, take the eggs out of the bator and give them to the hen. Simple....do it now.........

Ok, you talked me into it.

Happy St. Patricks day everyone.

roncrna, nope not the only guy. The man, the myth, the legend - MAHONRI (AKA thread starter of all this craziness) is also a man. (Well so his DW says anyway

) thebirdguy is also a man and I am sure there are a few others.

Renee, if they don't get here today I wouldn't worry too much. I am sure they will be here Monday. It is not so unusual for updates to the "tracking" to not show up until they get to either SLC or I pick them up. I am going to go down to the PO in a little bit to see if they got here.
I will have to get a dimmer knob for the next hatch. I know I had seen something about changing the knob on another thread but I wanted to get it warming up and stablilized as possible before setting today. I have it set with both vent covers off. Your sheet is very helpful but you might want to add the dimmer knob info to it. I don't remember seeing it there.
Can't take full credit for the invention, for as much as he teases me about my animals (and especially the chickens) DH was the one that came up with that idea.

LOL! Yes, I know, I am getting ahead of myself. It's just that I want so badly to do everything right. I have the temp under control and not too worried about the humidity until lockdown, so I am obsessing about that! Breath in, breath out......... They are not even set yet!

I understand. I tried to cover every base before I set the first time. SO do ask away. I just meant that even if I suggested something , you will have a zioolion choices in about 17 days.! LOL

This is what I do and I've tried other things that I don't do.
Rolling paper towels and inserting in a jar of warm water requires high quality paper towels, not the cheapies that fallover like a wilted plant when wet.

Cut sponges inserted into baby food jars filled iwth warm water , with sponge extended up out of the water. THe more exposure to the air the more wicking. I do this.

Stand a full size sponge wet with warm water, on edge. THe more sponges the higher the RH.

I have good luck getting the RH up to over 80% for the turkeys. ANd as the layout of the incubators vary, I use an LG.

Many other possibilities.
