Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well this is the first time I have have set any dark eggs so I'm not going to get to candle this hatch. All my eggs are OEs and BCMs. I could only see in like one or two before I set them. Going to be a long wait!

I usually do day 5, maybe 7, and 14 - that's it - but this time I wanted to take a picture of each day just for fun. So, I put in a few light-colored eggs from my flock just for this purpose. I'm not candling any of the "real" eggs (

) because I don't want to disturb them or get any oil from my paws on them (although I always wash my hands first!

).

I am so excited about this hatch! This will be my 2nd hatch and the 1st time I used my own eggs! I can't wait to candle next weekend! I am nervous that I have to travel this week for a couple of days and will have to rely on my DH to check the incubator for me.

I'm in the same boat, babigyrl! I have to leave THIS afternoon for Atlanta and will be back home late Tuesday night. I am taking the laptop with me but have to leave the eggs and bator at home with my boys (all 4 of my boys, even the old one.) I will have to depend on DS#1 (14 year old in the pic I posted earlier) to be my hands on the controls while I'm gone. I have given him explicit instructions not to do anything without my okay, and to call me if there is anything hinky going on with the temps or humidity. I have a pad next to the bator that I note date, time, temp, humidity, water added, eggs moved, etc. I hope they will write down something whenever they happen by for a look. That's all I can do....

I am going to candle the evening of the 26th or morning of the 27th....

Then I won't candle again until April 4th when they come off the turners.

That's all I ever do... just the two.

I did this the first time setting the dark marans eggs: I later realized I needed to see how large the air cell was developing because the marans are a little different than other eggs and the moisture doesn't leave the egg as easily. Just my 2 cents. I've set marans and EE.

Then if you're still anxious, let me know, I got sumptin for ya'...........

LOL! I'll take that award! It's all I seem to be up for!

I meant to ask ya'll yesterday... I have one of those perfect oval eggs in my hatch and was not sure which end was the pointed end. I know what the air cell looks like once it becomes obvious, clear looking area in the end of the egg, but I didn't see that in any of the fresh eggs I looked at. I candled the oval one and one end has a small lighter area without defined edges and the other end had a slightly darker, perfect circle with defined edges. Which is the air cell? I would guess the lighter end but what is the other thing? It was off center, so it is not variation in the shell thickness. Any ideas?
