Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

On a side note, got a call from the feed store about 30 min ago that the chicks I was wanting were there (Golden comets - great layers) so I ran over to grab some. Planned on getting 4-6 and am quite proud of myself. I kept saying...41 eggs in the incubator...41 eggs in the incubator...control yourself. Walked away with 6 Golden comet and just had to grab 2 fluffy faces. I get an A- on self control. Here are the pics, they are keeping me company in the office till I go home around 5...hopefully these will help tame my impatience with the ones in the incubator.

Oh man, wish we would get some comets around here, they are great layers, but I did hatch some NH's. They are too, and we the red sex link here, so I have some good egg layers. Looove the puffy faces. Just hatched some Pure Ameraucanas yesterday..BBS. Got some of all three colors. :)
Cute babies you have there. I love a fluffy yellow chick!

I also set some Exchequer eggs the same time I set the ones I counted for this contest. 5 are viable. Oh well, that would me..because they are in a different incubator. If I count those 5, plus take away the three I had to throw out, that would make 34 eggs. See, I can do chicken math before the are hatched..wait..they haven't hatched yet, and I know better than to count my chicks before they hatch.

I don't think it works on the hatch rate if you have extra eggs to fill in for ones that don't develop. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that's their intention. Otherwise everyone (at least everyone with extra space) could just set spares and end up with 100% hatch rates.

I'm like you, I do have other eggs "cooking" right now at the same time as my Easter hatch, some early and some late, but they will never be part of this hatch even though they'll probably hatch at the far parameters of the hatch dates. The only ones I counted were the eggs I set on the BIG set day (of course mine were all chicken eggs, so the day for me was Mar 17th).

Good luck though on the Exchequer. I LOVE them and can see them in my future at some point.

yep, makes sense..won't worry about them then. I just saw that I had them on my calender set the same day. Thanks!

Bucka here are your cliff notes through this afternoon:
Cliff notes version for those who can't keep up.
Waiting and chatter
Waiting and chatter
Waiting and chatter
Waiting, some boo boo's and chatter
Eggs being sent all over the place
Panic by those waiting for eggs
Set day, more panic by people waiting for eggs, panic by people CHECKING TEMPS WAYYYYYY TOO SOON (ahem, to Mahonri)
Contests starting to kick off
More panic by people about temps and humidity

PM's to Laree to fix mistakes
Back to waiting and chatter
Chick-among-us wrestles hawk barehanded!
Insomnia, emu pair, undies

Is that PM's to laree or lareePQG?

Yes, I read it. Thank you for the information. Have you tried "Minnesota Midget Melons" , they have a 60-75 days rather than the 90-100 days. They might be small, but they are delicious.

No I've never tried that variety but I am trying Gurney's lil' Sweet cantaloupes this time. I have saved quite a few for later planting just in case my experiment doesn't work out. They are also the miniatures. I sure hope they are as good as the full size. Are the Minnesota Midget Melons a cantaloupe or a type of watermelon? I sure would love to be able to grow watermelons!

Laree I hope your bum feels better soon! We get bark scorpions up here but they aren't as toxic as the straw scorpions that I dealt with in AZ. I keep a scorpion flashlight next to the bed since the idea of moving back into scorpion country made me nervous at first. Now I just use it to check on eggs in the bator.

YOu did better than I did. YOu had the chicks right there peeping at you! I went to the feed store praying the brooders would be empty . . . and they were all cleaned out. THen I looked in the book, the order book. I ordered 8 SS pullets! That was my compromise instead of finding a SS rooster! I done good!!!
