Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well, I'm down to 59 eggs. I noticed that the bator stunk, so it was time to go through and find out which one it was. Found and disposed of the quiter and 2 more that quit early, one of which was a double.

This puts me at only 2 of mine having to tossed. All the rest were my neighbor's.

Java, won't quote on you last post..lol..that was long..good for you for catching up! I guess I counted wrong, I recounted when you said that, no, I don't have 11 kids, I have 12! His, mine and ours! One big happy family! Really! They are all married or moved out now, but one, and he will be going out on a mission for our church this year...sniff..such a great kid to have around. He's kept us young feeling.
Now my turn to catch up on reading and posting.

Had a sad thing with our little Yorkie last night. I really thought I just may wake up to a dead pup in the morn. Just from how he was acting. I was in tears, he was in the middle of my hubby and myself. He was shaking, shivering, stretching his legs out..I got up and fed him a boiled egg because I had noticed he hadn't eaten much that day, but he barely wanted it. Now won't eat this morning. Vet took blood, will call in a couple of hrs. They will look for that liver shunt problem that the yorkies can have. They will be checking him for all sorts of things with the blood work. Still not eating. He's gone potty, not too worried about obstruction. ??

Question about injured roo. I have a Blue French Marans young roo about three months old. He is really pretty and I was going to keep him for breeding. I have a gentleman that comes over to get extra roos for his family when I have them and he was over about a week ago. He steped on the little roos leg and hurt it pretty bad. I don't think it is actually broke but it could be. It has been a week now and he still has trouble putting his weight on it fully and loses his balance when he does. Should I reconsider keeping him for breeding? Has anyone had a chicken injured like this that fully recovered? Sorry if it is the wrong thread to ask on but with soooo many wonderful chicklet caretakers here I thought it would be a good place

Cute chicks! I have a silkie pullet that I'm showing next weekend and she did something to the upper part of her foot and is limping

. I'm hoping its nothing serious and she just sprained it or something going up their new ramp to their coop. I hope your roo fully recovers!!!

I'm sorry for your loss, SCG.

I'd probably keep the injured rooster around and see how he does, but I am SOOOOOO not an expert.

Cynthia, keeping my fingers crossed for your yorkie.

Love your new chicks, Melissa Rose!

I got my preschool eggs home. All four of the lav lav/amer mixes are doing awesome- saw them wiggling around and everything. There's also 3 BCM. I saw movement in all three of them, but they look much smaller than I'd expect at this age- they looked more like 6 days along instead of the 10 they're supposed to be. Also, one of them appeared to have a blood ring, so I'm pretty sure it's not going to make it. The breeder was very unsure of the BCM eggs and hesitated to even give them to me- she felt like they'd gotten too cold and wasn't sure they were viable.

You can help some of this by doing the exact same thing I'm now doing to Rockette for the second time. Keep him in tight quarters. She's in a toaster box to keep her still and keep the leg next to her. The first time I thought she'd never make it, so I'm being optimistic that it will work this time. Last time I had no idea how many hours she had had her leg caughter and been hanging upside down. This time I got to her quick. She still isn't able to stand, but she's eatting drinking and making a lot of noise. I've been albe to help chicks with splayed legs by putting them in cups till the leg goes into place. Last time I worked with Rockette I just did the same thing minus the cup. The more the leg is allowed to slip out to the side the easier it is for it to heal in that position.

I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words regarding Black Betty.

As predicted, she passed away very quickly last night. I am just glad that it was swift.

I'm soooooo sorry. That was aweful and I feel really bad for you and her. At least she was comfortable and loved to the end.

We're Good! Kids stayed asleep and I managed to get the animals safe and warm, We finally got a break of sunshine this afternoon hoping it stays and the creek goes down

it hasn't made it to the house yet!
The kids ended up sleeping with the hubby and I all night, i was up and down every hour to check on the creek, so i am off for a nap with the kids! be back later

Man I hope that thing stays back! Here's hoping the sun dries it up enough to keep it from moving again.

Hope the yorkie's ok.

As far as the roo goes, I'd keep him around another 2 weeks or so see if he gets better. If not, he's probably not going to be able to breed effectively. I had a hen once that got bit by a snake and she couldn't walk (it was her fault for messing with it). I was terrified I'd have to put her down (she's my favorite hen). She improved and was like new again in a few days. They're pretty resilient, give him some good food, a quiet place (indoors?) to rest and see how he does.

So, tonight's the drawing for the biggest lottery ever. I've come to realize that, while it's awesome that there is always always a chance you could win, the more people there are after the same thing as you, the farther you're already slim chance falls.

It's a bit of a strange thought for me, but it's true. I've creeped myself out with this one.

I always liked the saying that the lottery is a tax on people bad at math.

And just so you know, I don't play! So I won't win. Better odds for those playing!
