Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

So I was REALLY REALLY bad today.

Pastrymama and I went on a road trip so she could buy some Basque chicks. It was a drive, but when we got there, I actually RECOGNIZED some of the chickens running around from last week's show. I was in the presence of STARS

Longish story short, the lady was superduperduper nice and sold me a mixed batch 18 eggs for $20. There were BBS Ameracunas, BBS Orpingtons, BW OEGBs, and other things I have already forgotten. I just finished setting them in the incubator. WOOOT!

I got to scratch this little lady and her sisters.
Lucky you, Laree! Sounds like a fun time!

That is sure a pretty pretty girl there!

The eggs were a mixture of breeds, the breeds themselves weren't running together.

Kathy- the kids had the greatest time ever. The lady had a little boy who showed off his birds and taught them to climb on the horse stalls and all sorts of questionable activities.

Yes! I even had a dream about getting hatching eggs out of China. They were from a very pretty reddish bird with golden speckles

One tip I forgot to get a picture of: Put a drop of food color into the water so that you can see where to fill the reservoir and to help to know when the level is low.

I am trying a low humidity hatch, but this is a fan forced incubator so I have water in there to keep the humidity between 20 and 30 percent. I can see where this will help with these eggs. They have a very small air sack now.

Whoops, double post

I can always tell when someone's on an Ipad or phone when sentences have an anomaly like this...

It's not a small town (100K). It's a college town (Kansas Jayhawks). We have a lovely walking downtown with historic buildings and street musicians and occasionally buskers. We see several thousand out-of-town shoppers weekly because of the wonderful restaurants and atmosphere, shops, etc. I get it...but...

Is it art?

It's all over the news...

Weird. I would not call that art, I would call it,... Um... Farming.
It will be funny afterwards, when people go to eat lunch in the park and step in a pile of chicken poo!

So true!!

How many poultry mouths do you actually have to feed now? You're starting to make me feel better about my numbers!

I know, right? Mahonri is really marking this place up!!

Took several pics of this chook too. She was so pretty and friendly, just loved her!! So much in fact that I set BBS Ameraucanas last night also!! Any ideas how she did?? I was concerned she would be DQ'd cuz the leg color.

I have no idea. I know NOTHING about showing birds. I just like it when they want scratchies and give eggies. Really, I am pretty simple.

On that subject.............
I have some Orps (English import males) looking at freezer camp very soon if they aren't sold. Are you interested?

Well....heck, yeah! I'm hungry for those but not to eat!! Actually, I only need one, for a temporary improvement plan, but that's one less that has to go to Camp Fri-ji-dair.

I'm up for a little road trip. Anything you need? I'm rolling in birds right now...I probably have it!

I dunno. I still have 4 Toms for sale, and am getting ready to sell off a bunch of my NYD hatch culls. I set 34 eggs today, and have another 24ish eggs currently on day 8.

If I were to count them, I might have a panic attack. BUT, if I could get rid of the toms, it would cut my feed bill down by a TON. Same with the culls. If I sell 20 of the chicks, then my chick feed bill would be managible again.
