Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Yes THAT is what I mean. NOT that the chicks are decided by temp like some things like turtles!!

You hatch more females than males, because the males can't handle the higher temps.

I can still remember my first day of kindergarden, the teacher called out "Mary Margaret" (my REAL name). But, since I had been called Missy for my entire life up to that time (unless I did something Really Bad), I just say there. The teacher finally said"Thats you, honey". Bet she thought she was in for a long year!

after so many failed hatches I really want to give up....but my husband is deployed....whats one more attempt??

You've come to the right place!! We'll help you keep your mind distracted from your previous poor hatches and make the time go faster until you DH returns. By the way, Thank You for serving along with your military hubby!

ok that photo of the eggs wrapped in paper towels scares me and I helped a sizzle out this morning. What's the story with it?

I have 2 1/2 sizzles hatched this am.

Congrats on your sizzles hatching.

From this thread here at BYC. The story? It would appear ??? that when people around started discussing "helping" chicks out, that maybe this person decided to help some of her hatchlings out, too. I don't know even 1% of the details. I just have read parts of the thread.

I remember when I first started hatching, that it seemed like every page I went to on the internet had someone telling how they helped a chick out. I got the impression that it was a normal thing to do for just about any chick that I perceived to be in trouble. Luckily, at some point in my youth I had read that poem/story about the butterfly that someone had tried to help out of the coccoon, but had killed instead, and that made me not want to fool with Mother Nature when it came to egg-hatching. However, it may be pretty common for a newer hatcher to think that helping a chick out is something you have to do most of the time even though it's not.

Is there a page here at BYC that describes or lists when helping out should actually be attempted and is necessary and when it is not? I know that it's a judgment call and that there are issues that need to be decided upon, but there are times that it should never be done ... like on Day 15 of chicken incubation or ... or like if there's no pip yet on Day 20 of chicken incubation.

Anyway. Live and learn. I just hope I don't have nightmares about those eggs/chicks. It's an unfortunate situation.

Kvmommy, correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that you joined us for last year's Easter Hatch as well and had some difficulty then.

I am sorry that it has not improved for you over that time! Maybe you could take some time and explain the difficulties you have been having here. There are so many experienced hatchers that, if you put all of the facts and information together in one post - list everything you've tried, someone might actually be able to help.
