Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Gerrymander laid an egg today!!! Gerrymander is the goose in my avatar. We now know he is a she! I've had two people tell me I should incubate the egg... both of whom should be fully aware that it requires two genders to achieve a youngster.

(and we only have 1 goose). I'd consider using the egg in the egg art contest, but goose eggs are not listed in the allowable eggs, or it wasn't on the first day the rules were posted, AND I think we will try to do something extra special with the first egg.

TazCat, best wishes for your mother in law, and your next week. May the stress be minimal and the hospital food edible.

Javagirl, so glad things are looking up!

Oh my goodness. Have tried to post 3 times without it working, switched to laptop, lets see if this works this time.

Soooooo the post was supposed to read....

My first hatch was 50%, second hatch 0%. Now I am on my 14th day of the third hatch. I ended up buying a bunch of Marans eggs at the auction and I have a full bator with a few of my brown layer mutts. Of the mutts I could see development and one definately moved for me. On the marans eggs I could see little to nothing. There were a couple of those that I could see a line across the middle and I worry about a blood ring, but what if its just a cord or a leg? I left them in. What causes blood rings and is there anyway to know for sure? Also, earlier in the week I threw out a stinky eggs. Thoughts?

Thanks SCG. Renee and Kathy

Ok, first, I am going to apologize that you may see this posting more than once.

My mother-in-law is in the hospital. She has been for a few days. She is REALLY sick. Today I found out what is all going on, and they are still doing more tests. She has blood clots in her lungs, with pnuemonia, and her heart is only outputting 14% (not sure of terminology) and they did a CT scan of her chest and found a HUGE (their words) mass in the center of her chest that is pushing on her lungs and heart. They are still running tests to find out if the mass has spread to other parts of her body, and are taking surgery. So we will be making a trip to Texas tomorrow morning as soon as I can rent the car.

What this means is that my chicken stuff is on hold. I have my parents coming over to take care of everything, and there is a lot of that stuff going on, with eggs in the bator and chicks in the brooder, but I wanted everyone to know that I plan on getting my swap eggs out on time, and meeting up to get eggs, and swap pea chicks and pick up chicks.....But if I can't do it on time, I will make it right.

Thanks for understanding.

Marans are tough! I read that blood rings usually happen with shipped eggs. They come from early quitters.

with the Marans Eggs I hatched, I looked for veins by the air cell. I could see them there. Other than that, it was just a dark mess. Good healthy veins means the chick is still living. Blood ring and veins won't be in the same egg.

Yes, smell them too and look for cracks and weeping on the outside of the shell.

Good luck! Did you sand the shells?

I did try to sand a couple just to see the difference. I did see some development (big shadow) in one of the lines on one, but aside from that nothing. The eggs weren't shipped so unless my driving was really bad on the way home from that auction, they should be good. If they have a blood ring, but don't smell is it ok to leave them in there? No weeping as of yet lol.

Part of the problem is I need to build a real candler. Right now I use a 15 LED flashlight on one end and a 9 LED flashlight on the other and turn it between the two. Not the best, but the best I can do until I feel creative.

ok I am getting some chicks at TSC tomorrow and they have Black Australorp and Barred Rock chicks. so here is my Q, of the two breeds here which one is the better one for laying eggs and meat??? oh, and which one is more friendly?? I do not keep mean roosters

I have a little Coleman flashlight, that I bought at Walmart. It is called Coleman MAX, 115 Lumens LED Ultra Bright. I think it was $29. or something like that. I can candle my Marans eggs with it. I do not sand them at all, and have no problem hatching them.

My opinion and I've had both is the barred rock for laying and australorpe for being docile, although the barred rocks are pretty tame too

They should all be good for egg production, but less so for meat. Hatchery stock is for "quantity," which means good layers. They are usually smaller than the standard in the meat end though.

You never know about friendliness.
