For a minute there I was starting to shake.

For those of you doing something more productive with your day, the site was down for about five minutes for an update.

Mine is still all broken. Now can't use regular computer, only this one finger typing jhandheld. Maybe will rejoin festivities nearer egg setting date. Will have to hookup keyboard to one of the other computers and figure out has the easiest connection for sd card to upload bator photo. Pain.

I was just trying to talk to my husband into getting some meat birds... but I've never processed my own chickens, or seen it done so I don't know that I could make myself eat my first hatch.

Once the roos start acting like little jerks you will have no problems sending them to freezer camp. I was a vegetarian since 2002, and Mahonri and his powers of hatching persuasion got me addicted to hatching. Then I had an abundance of little idiots running around. I now eat chicken, and I'm very happy about it. The kids got a good life, they were butchered quickly and humanely and they are tasty and healthy for you. The first few times are a bit hard, at least figuring out everything and getting a rhythm down... I felt slightly bad but thanked them for their service so I can eat. The reality of the situation is that you hatch about 98% more roosters than you can possibly need and you can only give so many away to real homes. If they're going somewhere to be butchered I'd rather spend the effort to do it myself - I fed and took care of them for 4 to 6 months, might as well capitalize on that. I use everything I can and make stock out of the carcasses. I'll get off my soapbox in a second, but if I can learn to do it and want to do it, then anyone can. This is how much I like it, just got delivered on Monday:

Oh... and the flabulous cat... I LOVE IT. My cat's official name is Sophie Anna Phatpants (on right, Sir Squeeky is on the left). Someone told me that cats don't like tin foil and that will keep them off your counters. Soph and Squeeks apparently never read the cat manual. They thought it was delicious and fun to play with. The first year I had Soph she ate a few streetlamps (bulbs, wiring and plastic) and a few plastic trees on my HO train platform while I was at work. I bet the tin foil was more tasty.

She's a weird little lovebug.

Oh, that last photo of Sophie Phatpants is great!!

I don't know if we'll get another cat after Mickey dies or not. I LOVE cats, but after owning geriatric cats for so long, you forget how active younger cats are (until you go to someone else's house and see the cats jumping around like monkeys). I wish I had some kind of courtyard or something so I could have a cat that went outside but couldn't stray too far. I got really tired of getting up at 2 a.m. to rescue our male geriatric cat ( the one who brought a live weasel into the house) from various battles he was in. He was a great cat.

Keep us posted on the emu hatch! I am always trying to show DH photos of different chickens I like on the forum (he calls BYC "Chickenbook") and he is never all that interested. But he happily watched The Sheriff's emu videos! :)

My day has been eventful. Not delightfully so, but eventful, none the less.

I did sell 2 pens of roosters. That makes me 40 roosters less, and 2 more open pens.

I lost my favorite Delaware hen. Floozy died. I am so sad.

I am not one to be sentimental towards my chickens, generally. I rarely name them. Floozy was special. I will miss her......... ALOT.

I have been thinking about it. I think it was fate. I would have never considered selling Floozy or Oliver. They were my best Delaware pair. Floozy is gone now, so really..... I don't need Oliver now. Maybe I can part with him now. I have my projects (Delawares) to work on, so I think I will sell Floozy's pen.
