Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

We have a broody! She's on infertile eggs until the 17th, and then the EE project eggs go under her.

We should try to have at least ONE person from every state. Can we do that?

I think I have Nevada covered all by myself. Unless Tanichca is on my side of the border (when I zoom in she looks to be in Oregon).
Where are all the other Nevadans? Are you all really gonna let me hatch all by myself? Well at least I have a lot of company in California, my very near neighbors (I can see the State line from my house). OK I'm off to the Nevada thread to go whine...

Ron thanks for posting that info on hatching eggs! I have the page bookmarked for future reference.

First egg of the season... first Duck egg ever, and my Duck's first egg. Bunch of firsts today lol.
I've been hoping for some eggs from my flock of chickens to help fill the bator... The Duck is the only one to answer my wishes... and we have no drake.

I would post a pic of the weirdly marked thing... but I don't remember how to post pics here lol.

Speaking of ducks, I could post this question on another thread perhaps, but I know there are many ducky folks on here

I have 5 duck hens and 1 drake left after the other drake and 2 hens blew away in a wind storm last fall. Is that ratio going to be hard on 1 drake? From what I can tell he's doing his best to keep up

I'm not amused with my dad today. One of my 2 game chicks died last night and what did he do? He was so insensitive about it he made me mad. Mom gave me the rest of what I needed to get another chick from the feed store and she fully intended for dad to take me. Nope, not happening. He says it's not worth it to just get one chick. Well fine then! Why not just throw in another $4 to get 2?

Sorry for that. It seems like he's against me on everything. After all, he's the one that wants to get rid of my roo.

ETA: Now he wants to keep my roo. I'm getting so frustrated with my dad. This is getting ridiculous! He also said that he wasn't going unless we were getting at least 4 chicks, but I only have enough for 1. I just can't win with him.

Okay, I'm going to help participate here but I'm not hatching eggs for Easter because I have eggs in there right now, they're ducks so I've already missed it.

I'm here from Kim -wolftracks!

I'm sorry.

And I am sorry about your chickie. But, before long, you will have many happy chickies running around happily, and hopefully, they will cheer you up.

Yep, I have eggs going into lockdown tomorrow. Since Dad decided we're keeping Red I was hoping to sneak another Black Australorp pullet over on him. I'm about to have more RIRs than I'll really know what to do with. And after the Easter hatch...

Tip for checking fertility from Keeping chickens:

You can't know for sure if an egg is fertilised without breaking it open (or trying to hatch it). There can be several factors such as quality of food, quality of parents, weather etc, but generally, if you have a rooster who is doing his job and the rooster and hens are in good health it is fair to assume that at least 75% would be successfully fertilised. To spot check an egg crack it into a bowl and look at the yolk - there should be a small white mark somewhere on the yolk. When fertilised the small white mark becomes larger and more round and shows yellow in the middle so an egg that has been fertilised has a white mark on the yolk that looks a bit like a doughnut - in an unfertilised egg the white mark will be just a blob.

Woo hoo! I'm not the only Nevadan now! When are your ducks due to hatch Sheryl?

BTW you can still join and enter the contests without hatching for Easter. But you are not too late to do a staggered hatch of ducks. Don't duck eggs take 28 days? You would just set them tomorrow.
