Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I'm not amused with my dad today. One of my 2 game chicks died last night and what did he do? He was so insensitive about it he made me mad. Mom gave me the rest of what I needed to get another chick from the feed store and she fully intended for dad to take me. Nope, not happening. He says it's not worth it to just get one chick. Well fine then! Why not just throw in another $4 to get 2?

Sorry for that. It seems like he's against me on everything. After all, he's the one that wants to get rid of my roo.

ETA: Now he wants to keep my roo. I'm getting so frustrated with my dad. This is getting ridiculous! He also said that he wasn't going unless we were getting at least 4 chicks, but I only have enough for 1. I just can't win with him.

Sorry about your chick Razadia. Sounds like your Dad is itching for 4 more chicks instead of one.

Mahonri -- The bator is holding at 100 right now (for 36 hours so far) and I do have a fan. I will try to back it off a smidge to 99 when I get home from work today. If you decide to have that litter of pure Goldens, would you consider donating one to our Police Department as a Goodwill Ambassidor? We are looking for a pup to be trained to interact with the public, especially kids, and to perform some safety educational functions for events. We want him/her to sit in the car and wear a seatbelt, retrieve a cell phone, bark at a person wearing a mask, etc. We get requests to bring a dog to lots of events and our K-9's are not good with crowds. We have found that people just want to pet a police dog and really don't care if it actually is a detection or apprehension dog.

If we do it, you'll be on the list!

I was asked a question via email about the Brinsea Mini Advance EX and Duck Eggs.

I don't have experience with this so thought I would ask here since some on this thread hatch Ducks:

Thank you so much for the advice and the coupon code Ron, I really appriciate it. I'm seriously considering the mini advanve ex model. Im just a little worried about the size capacity. would you or anyone else know if I could fit a 3 inch long chunky duck egg in to something like that? How does it automatically turn the eggs?

Thanks for helping

It looks like I have some eggs which will be arriving earlier than others. My EOs might be here on Monday or Tuesday; whenever they get here, I'll let them rest for a day, and then they are going into the incubator. I'll still have RC Leghorns and Wheaton Marans coming from Gabbard and my swap eggs.

So... my eggs will be set over about 5 days. It will have to be a staggered hatch. I am thinking it is doable, but I need advice.

Genesis 1588, automatic turner, forced air. I have had success with about 30% humidity for incubation and 65% for hatch. I am thinking of bringing it up to 50-55% for the full extended lockdown period - will that work? Also, how do I deal with turning the eggs which are still incubation when the others are locked down?

If only I could get the temps to stabilize in my LG still air. Last year, I wanted to use it as a hatcher. I would get the temperature perfect for three or four hours, come back and check it in the morning, and it would be 106 or something. I am not cooking my eggs. I taped the edges, I put books on top, .... no good. I'd get another Genesis (a new one with the digital temps!) but it seems to be backordered.

Ideas?

I don't know if this will help or not, but, I can tell you what just happened to me last week.
I had eggs in my incubator, and never did switch them over to the hatcher. Meaning.... the humidity never was increased. It was around 35%. Five of the eight eggs hatched. Nice clean hatch, too.....

Ohhh, I found it in-stock...

I wonder if my husband would notice.

I think we are probably stimulating the economy. I've bought two batches of expensive eggs, new metal nest boxes, and am pondering a new incubator....

Come to think of it, I never upped my humidity when I hatched ducks a week(ish) before chickens. I locked down but didn't up the humidity. I had a good hatch too, 5/5 and no one was sticky and nasty. Might be worth a try again.
