Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Really?
I LOVE the smell of citrus blooming. But I also love the smell of dead skunk and dairy farms.
One of us must be crazy.
When your unders get so saggy in the rear you can smuggle a bunch of oranges, it is time to toss them. Elastic or no.
It is definately too hot to keep chickens in AZ. Today the DH and I were designing the wiring for a fan system we are putting in using a cast-off solar panel and a bunch of scrounged 12" server fans.
Laree's coop: Classy.
ETA: someone told me once they keep chickens in Iceland.
I've been told (by more than one person) that in the summer, my coops look a bit like Haiti.

Laree, you are in rare form today!!! I was rolling!!!!

No, honey, that is not me. That is my daughter, who is 18 years younger than her oldest brother (she has 4 big brothers). This is me........

Kathy that is not you!!!! Leading all these poor people to believe that. Shame on you!

I would like to state for the record that the lonely only peachick is worse than the lonely only chickenchick. They know when they aren't in the same brooder with the chicks they knew and loved, and will whine and cry incessantly. INCESSANTLY, AS IN NOT CEASING.

A bra is the only solace. It must be on me. I am doing chores with a peachick in my shirt.

As you were.

Not this baby? I knew I should have given you some chicks for her.

I had ordered RC Brown Leghorns and Wheaton Marans from Gabbard for the hatch, but it seems the Marans aren't laying. This means I may get Barnevelders, Blue Birchen Marans, or .... Sumatras. I'm sort of obsessed with Sumatras at the moment, so I realllly hope that is what I get. It has been so hard not to order them in the BST auction, but since I have already spent *cough*-hundred dollars on chicken- and hatch-related items in the past month, I really can't justify this to my frugal husband. To myself, no problem. To him, not so much.

Sigh. So many beautiful birds, so little money. And space. And coops. And feed...

LIfe took over for a while but now I'm back. I owe some one some recipes, bread recipes, so here it goes. I've not been having luck posting today. Here goes:

Overnight Pecan Rolls
6 rolls

1 pkg (1 tablespoon ) active dry yeast
pinch sugar
1/4 cup warm water (105-115 degrees0
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup butter melted
2 tablespoons sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups all purpose or bread flour

Pecan filling
2 1/2 cups pecans finely chopped
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon

1. Sprinkle yeast and sugar over warm water in a small bowl. Stir to dissolve and let stand until foamy, about 10 minutes.

2. In a large bowl, combine sour cream, butter, eggs and salt with a whisk. Add yeast mixture and 1 cup flour. Beat hard for three minutes. Until smooth. Add four 1/2 cup at a time with a wooden spoon to make a very soft dough, using no more than 4 cups flour in all. Divide into 6 balls and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight.

3. In the morning, combine ingredients for the pecan filling. Roll out 1 ball into a 6 x 12 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.Sprinkle with about 1/4 cup pecan filling. Roll up from long end and pinch seams and edges. Repeat with remaining dough. Place on a greased or parchment covered baking sheets seam down. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise about 60 minutes or until puffy. Slash each roll 1/2 inch deep into 6 sections.

4. Brush with egg glaze and bake in a pre-heated 375 degree oven 15-20 minutes or until golden. Cool 10 minutes on a rack and cut into slices.

BTW- Have I mentioned how stinking tired I am from the beat-down I took from Pastrymama yesterday? I've got friction burns on my elbows and everything.

FYI: kids' bday parties in the AZ: hard core.
