Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I am joining the Easter hatch! Have to see how many eggs I will get from Bootsie before I can finally fill out the form.
Not advised to set pullet eggs, right? Even if you see them being bred? I can add a few of mine but my hens are very young.
Is it true that the photo contest is over? I sure wished I had read about it before now.

I think the only problem with setting pullet eggs is they are usually small, therefore small chicks. I know a lot of people who hatch them just fine though. I guess if they aren't taking up valuable incubator space, what have you got to lose?

p. 219 of the 1995 version of Damerow's Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care, Feeding Facilities

She subracts out non-fertiles and all quitters before figuring out the "hatch rate."

(A-J=K. Do the math. Then K/(A-B)=hatch rate. It sounds convoluted, but if you have the book, you know what I mean.)

However, it would seem that for Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long that we are going with a much simpler system, right?

A=eggs set
B=eggs hatched
B/A=hatch rate

Am I understanding this correctly? I'm not sure it's every been mentioned in this thread, unless it was added to post #1. Or I just missed it because of mental overload (this is my first hatch big hatch-a-long).

Can anyone shed a little light, please? Is there anything official? Or is it announced later?

I'm picturing the 24 embryos that I think I'm setting and then as I take out infertiles, that my hatch rate is going down if we are doing this by the simpler method. Fine by me. But I'm thinking I need to set the most fertile rooster's progeny instead of the other rooster's progeny even though I need a few chicks from both.

What was last year's total hatch rate? Anyone remember off the top of your head? What was the winners hatch rate? Am I the only one trying for a good hatch rate?

Thank you. (see me taking subsurvient curtsey and stumbling backward out of the room)

I do the math for REAL hatch rate on my own, but for the contests we have to just gulp and get on with it. I'm setting a bunch, but that includes 18 eggs that have been bumping around in my hubby's truck, packed nicely. It certainly will test what a set shipped by truck for a week result in for a hatch rate! If I wanted to win best hatch rate, I'd omit them, but I think it's best to try, anyway!

I can't remember what the rates were last year, but I think Sumatra503 (or someone) set a handful and all of them hatched, for a 100% hatch rate. That was the strategic way to do it!!

ok so done trying to win auctions i was told i won went to go pay looked back to make sure i was sending to right paypal email not even 2 min after looking and they changed it to someone else winning so not right.

Welcome.

I usually do not set them until they have been laying at least a couple of weeks and I am consistently seeing bullseyes on the yolks, but have every egg laid in this hatch and that includes several first-time-ever eggs and no idea about fertility at all in most of my breeding pens..

Thanks for the advice! keep it coming because its allll appreciated. Oh and I meant its been in the baggie for over 24 hours...somehow I hit 3. lol I will def. keep an eye on the air cell. I did the weighing them last time and a bunch were shrinkwrapped and I didn't open the bator. Sooo...maybe I'm just dumb and can't follow instructions.

Well today the dog finally had enough of being attacked. The pullet jumped on her face wtih her claws bared and pecked Hurley's eye. Hurley gave a half-assed snap at the chicken, which she was reprimanded for. But this relationship between the two is going to end badly. I don't know why Spoony is soooo aggressive to the dog.

I got my eggs from crazypetlady! Might be the only eggs I set. :( But...i don't want them to get too old. Can I set them now and just not be a part of the best/worst hatch rate? If I get other eggs those can be for the best/worst. First hatch etc.

My incubator is almost full of eggs for this EPIC HATCH

I'm holding them in the turner without the heat on.

Hopefully the eggs coming in the mail will be here before Saturday noon.

This is so cool that so many BYCers are doing this TOGETHER!
If we could get Congress to work like this, we might get something done in Washington
