Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Hooray!!! DH says my Basque eggs have arrived! I won't be able to check them until after work, but now I won't have to keep the other shipped eggs waiting too long.
My eggs from Skyline were delivered yesterday. Out of 15 eggs, only 3 were missing the air cell. The others were there in good to poor condition, but much better than the Dorking eggs I have in the incubator now. Those had no air cells in any of the eggs. They did come back though.

Ok, I need to post just to get to 400 posts for my account. Maybe I will be lucky and get one of those random winning posts from the contest page.

Thank you to this thread for removing eggs from the hatching Universe for this hatch! So many eggs were purchased last week that Breeders across the country rushed to auctions to sell their hatching eggs and now most here have stopped buying them.

Because of this, I was able to win an auction yesterday for $40.00 that that went for $90.00 last week.

I will be getting some Cream Legbar eggs next week.

HELP!!!!! Incubators malfunctioning! my LG that I added a computer fan to is having hot spots. Upper right corner, 103, everywhere else 98. I rotated and tested with multiple thermometers and they all agree I have a hot spot. And on top of it my 18 mo. old broke my homemade bator, and I thought it was fixed but I can't get the temps up. Ughhhhh!!!

How did it get broke? Take a pick please maybe we can help. At least give some good advice to help you along.

Well, I made room in my incubator today. I took 5 call eggs which were clears

, 2 clear EE eggs, and 10 of these out of the incubator.

That means I have room to set some chicken eggs along with the turkey eggs I already have in for the hatch. No time to ship, maybe I can find some locally.

Or I might have time to get some quail eggs mailed...maybe I should go check ebay out.

Will that clock never move???? I'm minutes away from heading east to meet NotAFarm for Icelandic eggs, and I don't want to be at work ANYMORE! The nicer it is out the slower the clock. Record 80 degree weather here. Wish I could declare a Spring Fever day and shut the place down. (must be patient and set a good example)

He broke my LG by removing the snap thingies on the heating element, and I just bolted it back on. And I think its been like that all along because I noticed that when I did hatch usually only eggs in middle and front hatched, never the ones in the back. So I tested it with a ton of thermometers. I have a computer fan hooked to a 5 v. I thought that might be too low, but I was under the impression since it was a still air, the heat would be even over the surface and not even across the top.

As for my homemade, he broke the plexi glass out which I had sealed and glued but I screwed it in this time. He also tore the flexwatt heat tape out, but that was ok because it barely kept the temp up. I bought 2 more and put them in and it should be even hotter now. He also tore some of the spongy tape stuff that seals the edges, but I replaced it. (i've been sick with chronic lyme and my new meds make me really sick so I didn't keep a good eye on him one day) But now its just not keeping the heat in!!

for those of you who are going to hatch turkey eggs after this hatch-a-long, I have a VERY important tip for all of you!!!!

when you set the turkey eggs, a week later you need to set chicken eggs with the turkey eggs!!!!!!! I did this last year and all of my turkey poults that had chicks with them lived!!!!!!!
wee.gif
this year when I set the turkey eggs, I did not do chicken eggs with them and the ones that hatch died!!!!!!!!!!

I only had 3 turkey poults but it was heart breaking to have lost them.

Great reminder!!! I've not lost a poult yet all because I read it on BYC!!

Good morning, hatchers. I got 10 hours of sleep last night and I still feel totally exhausted when I got up. At least it's Friday.

I also have no idea if hatching turkeys is still as good of an idea today as it was yesterday...
Of course its a good idea!!

I think the problem was the temp spike and things evaporated. It looks like one is pipping. Hopefully I have enough moisture in there now. I didn't want to move everything so I soaked 2 sanitary napkins and stuck them in. LOL Where did I get THAT from? LOL

Love multi-use items!!! Know a vet that uses tampons for ear issues in large dogs.

This will be my first time. I bought a LG incubator w/ egg turner and added a fan and a knob to the temp control stick. I fired it up last night and had it even out right at 99.5 in 3-4 hours. I added water and monitored it a while longer. I had to up the temp a bit this morning and then after dinner tonight I am setting the eggs. My eggs are from my own backyard flock. I have about 14-15 green EE's, 7 EE/BCM mix, and another 6-8 mixes between my EE roo and RIR, black and red star production hens. I just picked up a new FBCM roo last night and would like to find a few hens to go with him for future projects. Here's looking forward to a successful Easter hatch!
Many of use use the LG. Have a look at the LG threads and thanks to Renee you'll definitely want to read this. Incubation Cheat Sheet - BackYard Chickens Community

Mine has hot spots too--didn't think of the added PC fan as the cause. Hmmmmm . . . . remove the fan?? See link above, Renee uses a still air LG , or 5 or 6 actually.
