Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

ok here is an update the thermomiters that came with with the incubators read 100 but the digital and fish tank ones read 97 in each of the incubators which one should i go by

Well 97 is too low.

100 is good.

I have one other thermometer that I got at Radio Shack it's white and has a long cord. It's always within .1 degree of my Brinsea Spot check...

That would be the quick way to go if you are close to a Radio Shack.

Then order the Brinsea spot check. I've been using it all day... worse than a mother hen. In previous years I had both incubators side by side... this year I have one in the den (where I did my NYD and GHD hatches) and the 1588 in the Family Room in the same spot where I've done all of my previous hatches....
... I'm getting exercise going back and forth... wishing I had TWO Spot checks. Time to order another one!!!

Yea, that's what I'm afraid of, they are dinky little things. They are from a blue EE hen that I just love, her first two, and that is why I want to set them so badly. They probably aren't even fertile. She shows no signs of having been harrassed by the roos. They are the two in the lid of the carton, off to the side.

I've saved every egg laid for over three weeks, and they are nearly all from pullets that started laying during that time, so you are not alone setting first eggs.

Don't forget to check out the contest page (located in post #1 and also in a lot of our signatures) - THERE ARE A LOT OF CONTESTS OPEN NOW!

The contests will certainly keep us busy and entertained in the next 3 weeks until hatch date!

hi everyone i now have a total of 105 silkie eggs (still waiting on one more package to arrive tomorrow with 23 eggs not including any extras)
Now I know who to PM when I have bator space for some silkie eggs.

I will be getting some Cream Legbar eggs next week.
Woo Hoo. I need to go check these out, I've been hearing a lot about them but haven't gone looking yet.

He broke my LG by removing the snap thingies on the heating element, and I just bolted it back on. And I think its been like that all along because I noticed that when I did hatch usually only eggs in middle and front hatched, never the ones in the back. So I tested it with a ton of thermometers. I have a computer fan hooked to a 5 v. I thought that might be too low, but I was under the impression since it was a still air, the heat would be even over the surface and not even across the top.

As for my homemade, he broke the plexi glass out which I had sealed and glued but I screwed it in this time. He also tore the flexwatt heat tape out, but that was ok because it barely kept the temp up. I bought 2 more and put them in and it should be even hotter now. He also tore some of the spongy tape stuff that seals the edges, but I replaced it. (i've been sick with chronic lyme and my new meds make me really sick so I didn't keep a good eye on him one day) But now its just not keeping the heat in!!
I still have like 400 posts to read I hope you have this sorted out by now.

Great reminder!!! I've not lost a poult yet all because I read it on BYC!!

It's true, and it's a great excuse to hatch more fuzzies

All my eggs are in! YAY. Have some tiny little pullet eggs in there, which may or may not hatch, but they sure are cute. :)

now where am I going to PUT all these chickens!! =) =)

DS#5 and I were out cleaning the two 'grow out' pens and he asked me that exact question.

I said, "Son, you and your brother are going to have to come out and take some pics and put some chickens up for sale!"

I told him he can keep a cut of the money... for motivation.

I love the pair of Red Sussex I hatched out, but that roo is going to start crowing one of these days and I think they should be kept together....

TMTD, TLT.

Bah, when it asked me to enter how many eggs I thought Mahonri would hatch, I thought I typed in 78. It's showing 38. Is it possible to get that fixed?

Quote: A word to the wise. 38 would be a much more accurate guess since I only put 74 eggs in the bator!
