Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Thanks so much SCG, that really helps, I think I just needed some reassurance haha. I'm just hoping a few of them hatch, this is my first attempt so I would be happy with one! But that would mean I would have to go buy some more chicks to keep that one company... oh dear it goes full circle doesn't it?? Lol

No problem, that's what we're here for.

I'm surprised how resilient eggs are... my first ever broody went broody at the end of December 2010, when it was significantly subzero. I let her sit, of course. She'd wander off the nest to go do her business and eat and get back on the wrong nest sometimes. Her eggs would be frigid cold by the time I'd get home from work to remedy the situation and she still had 3/4 hatch. Which brings me to the resilience of chicks... their water would freeze in the coop quickly, and sometimes momma would knock it over and the shavings would freeze... the chicks survived.

Just a reminder.... about temperatures in your incubators...

The temperature will cycle (like your furnace and air conditioner do). The accurate temperature is an average of the highest and the lowest you will see on your thermometer.

Do not just look at your thermometer and think that is the temp. You must average the highest and the lowest.

Wait, first I guess I should tear myself away from the incubator long enough to see what the contests are!!! Then I will know what to take pictures of

Then we will be in touch

Anna - why not grab your camera and go out and try for some pics to enter into the contests? Then you can work on your egg art for that contest. If you have any ingenious chicken designs, take pics of those, as well. Then if you're still anxious, let me know, I got sumptin for ya'...........

Well, heres my list!
2 barred Cochins
2 blue orpingtons
4 black/blue Marans
2 splash Marans
It's a small bunch compared to some, but I won these eggs and it's my fist time hatching so it is great for me :) I'm using a little giant still air incubator that has a turner that my dads friend gave me. I'm super excited! Love this thread! I spend so much time in it!!! :)

hi everyone i have 105 in my 2 incubators and when my last 23 get her on monday i will put them in and take a picture and post it here for the best rate contest and to let you see the stacking and to make sure i did it right so i know if i will mess them up with the stacking right now in incubator 1 i have 10 extra stacked and in incubator 2 i have 11 extra stacked every so often i go and swithch them so each egg has a turn on top and they all get a chance in one of the slots that way i know they are getting turned some. They are all silkies and my daughter is so excited they are her favorite and i have to admit until i got our first silkie i did not like them but now i love them .

I don't have problems with not touching the temp knob, or even keeping my hands out of the 'bator for the first 18 days; when I hit lockdown, though, I have to start the chant: DO NOT LIFT THE LID!!!!

DO NOT LIFT THE LID!!!

Congratulations!

Not touching is the hardest thing--patience!! I re-read CHookschicks CHeat Sheet when I'm wavering and about to touch the knob. Do not Touch, I recant!

Congrats to Horton Farms

Everyone worried about temps., me 2. My only therm. that works is in C so I was at 37c which is 98.6f and I had to bump it and it's hold at 37.4cc which is 99.32c so I'm NOT touching it again close enough. We are going to the hardware store to get more lumber DH is working on more pens that he say's I need, he is right of course but shhh don't tell him I said so.
