Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Yesterday I went to a few lighthouses along the Maine coast...

I ran into a local woman and started talking with her - she said "boy, the birds are obnoxious today, aren't they?"

I didn't even hear anything.

I've got the windows open to the house now, and I'm hearing 3 roosters crowing and about 10 hens singing an epic egg song. And occasionally a duck quacks. Sea gulls don't have anything on my biddies.

We have SUMMER temps here this week... I'm loving life.

I don't have problems with not touching the temp knob, or even keeping my hands out of the 'bator for the first 18 days; when I hit lockdown, though, I have to start the chant: DO NOT LIFT THE LID!!!!

DO NOT LIFT THE LID!!!

Really? I have trouble during lockdown too! The chant does not work at all then.

well I made the pedigree baskets and I even have pics of each step and BYC WILL NOT let my post my pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have done everything I know how to do and nothing!!!!!!!!!

if anyone wants to see my pics of the step by step how to make pedigree baskets, you will have to PM me your email to get the pics. I may have to drop out of this HATCH-A-LONG because of BYC not letting me post any pics, not even the pics of my eggs

Got out of bed this morning cuz my ditzy t-bred was acting, well, ditzy. Discovered the ill mannered 1/4 horse was in the driveway, where she didn't belong and the t-bred was jealous and having massive anxiety issues. As I was looking out the window at the equine scene I noticed a bunch of snow on the hills around our house. That may explain why it is so cold. Beautiful though!! So jealous of people who get snow on a regular basis. Got my boots on, chased the 1/4 horse (you'd think at the age of 31 she'd stand still to be caught, yes?) around until she decided to be caught, tossed her back into the pasture and now, all is quiet.
oh, what happened to Laree -- wasn't her last post about a major war wound, and then poof, nothing? Her avatar is a bit ominous -- makes me wonder if she pushed the hens for too many eggs and there was a major uprising. Hope she is ok.
Rarely bored, sounds like your life fits your avatar

For a loose horse (I have a part t-bred mare who will get out if she gets half a chance, grass is ALWAYS greener y'know) I take a 1/4 full 13oz coffee can (it's what I measure my feed by) of grain and shake it. All of my horses know what that sound is. She will stand still and let me put her halter on if I give her some of the grain. Sure beats chasing them down.
I am with you too.......Laree where are you and are you OK?

Yes, I'm trying it this time too. I'm a little worried/confused about the fan issue. I don't think I can disconnect my fan for lockdown either which I would prefer. My channels are empty as of set time but, holding about 26%. If it drops below 22-23% I think I will add some water. I feel comfortable with humidity at 30-35% tho. Any thoughts? Dsgard, can you hold my hand for this hatch? I'm nervous!

mothrhen, we can hold each other's hands and Renee is helping with lots of hints. No water for now (I think my RH is around 20 to 30 but I don't trust the silly hydrometer that came with the unit nor do I think any of the other ones you can buy relatively inexpensively are worth it) so I will just see what they look like around day 10. If the air cells look too big at that time, I am planning on putting a little bit of water in the channels and run some tubing through one of the vent holes to add more as needed.

Well we have not had power issues for weeks, didn't lose power a bit yesterday when the winds were howling, I go shopping and come home to a brown out. Trying not to get too upset about it since there is nothing I can do. For now neither bator is really running because there is not enough "juice" coming into the house. I just hope they get this resolved soon. So tired of these silly power issues around here. Storming like crazy, power is rock steady, conditions outside fairly "normal" chance of power issues.

Well I better try to get some homework done before the silly battery on the puter dies on me.

I see where you've made the album but it does say it's blank. Have you tried logging out and logging back in?

Also are you using the photo updater and not copy and paste?

I've found I'm always blank when I copy and paste, but they show up when I upload using the thing on the top toolbar.

If not you can send them to me and I can upload them for you.

It's my BYC name @gmail.com

I'm freaking out, I think I ruined this hatch already!!
barnie.gif
This morning, however, I checked on it again and the temp was 98.5 so I bumped up the thermostat and it went up to 102!!! I put it down again and now it is staying between 99 - 100, so I am not going to touch it. I had my incubator rock steady for 4 days, how did I mess this up so bad?? I'm sorry for venting but I tried to talk to my mom about it and she said "Why don't you just try and hatch them in the toaster oven?"
roll.png
She was serious too... lol

WELCOME TO MY WORLD....

Thats awesome. And thats a great hatch rate with a homemade one. I wanted to make one but I don't have any parts laying around to do it so I would have way more than $35 to build it. I have a small fridge but it still works so I may get yelled at if I tear it apart. lol
I used the mini-fridge they are really insulated good and hold the temp really well. I knew someone who was going to throw it away. The heat source is from an old two bulb ceiling light wired through an electric thermostat. the water bottles at the bottom i use to hold heat and reduce cycling of the lights. The items I bought were from ebay and the cost is total cost including shipping.
2 blue lighted 100mm computer fans - $6
electric humidity sensor - $2 (battery powered)
electric thermostat/sensor - $21
I did buy a switch to turn off the fans before i open the door to eliminate blowing colder air suddenly across the eggs at home depot for just under $4. The box on top was an old cigar box that I cut holes in to mount the the thermostat and humidity sensor in.

Jesshan8 and debs_flock, would your like your incubator and pedigree box (respectively) entered into the invention contest?  Let me know.

BTW, I probably will not be updating the contest page until tonight, so don't stress, people.  I have a day of yard work ahead of me.

I would love to enter it in the contest. I am rather proud of it even though it is not the prettiest!

It sounds like you have it in hand. Not to be a bad influence, but they are in-stock (and more $$$) here. (There's a coupon code for $10 off which makes it a little easier to swallow.) I didn't really need one, but...

Do not throw anything out yet. It's really too early. I've been candling two of my Thursday-night-set eggs to take pictures, but I would never make a decision so early.

Don't toss anything until day 7 at least. Even then, I note which are not developing, toss outright clears, and leave the rest until day 14 just in case.

24 hours:

It is day 7 for me, I have 5 eggs that will be staggered but the other 40 are on day 7. Some things happened that made me get my eggs early or not at all.

One easy way to do it is it make a photobucket account for free. You can post all of your pics there, and next to each pic it gives you a link. You can use the URL for your pics in the URL tab when you click the little BYC pic button. Hit submit and there it goes!

<--------See the second line down that says Direct Link? Click to copy.

<--------Click the Image URL tab and paste that link from Photobucket in the Import URL blank, then type a label if you want, or leave it blank to have it autofill. Click Submit.

Here's that same pic:
