Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Hi all! Quick question about humidity. It's anywhere from 44 to 50 and I want it to be lower, my room temp is 70-73 and not by bath room. I'm using little giant still air. I did add water day 1, because I was going to do the 55% humidity hatch, but then read up on dry hatch and changed my mind. I would really like to do this Without opening it up. I'm kinda scarred. Because I'll know I'll candle them. Or mabye a few. Ahhhhhhh! Please help.
leave it alone. The humidity will go down. When it does, do not add water. Watch the air cells and make sure they are evaporating correctly. I think there is a link to proper air cell size by day in the tips section.

So, if in day 7 it is not in the correct place, add water, but use a sponge or a small tub. I would start with a small one like the bottom of the plastic easter eggs if you need to add humidity.

I suspect the air cells will be fine.

Good hatch

THat would work! Only maybe I do want it to be seen, so they think I am watching . . . hmmmm

Post a sign that says " monitored by Remote Camera Its for your safety" and not have a camera, not really necessary to have one as long as they believe there is one.

Ok, although I finally have faster internet my patients are still slow. I can't find where I posted pics of the chicken eggs I put up for the best hatch rate contest. I have my final eggs set so i'm gonna post them again and go back and notify who ever it is I need to notify. I'll have to look that up too. Those of you helping with this hatch along and all the contest............BLESS YOU!!

I have a total of 175 eggs
Here is my list
Silkies and sizzles 61
OEGB 6
EE 19
GLP 10
JB Quail 72

Here's pics

I received 2 of my swaps at wrong times to set the eggs but I figure 175 eggs is enough.

Exactly! Thanks, dsqard, for explaining. I haven't caught all the way back up on this thread, so am coming in here not quite sure what is going on, but I'm guessing this was about my post.
But yes, lovely manicure. Not a nasty gram. During the proofreading before I posted it, I second guessed myself and wondered if the avatar photo was actually the hand of the person posting and tossed in a question mark. I'm so sorry it wasn't clear and that there could be a misunderstanding. I'd never send a nasty gram after all you've been through. Never. No. No. No. No. I just thought you were so cool and tough and brave and had a manicure to die for. Big hugs for you. And do keep us updated on the little hen you stitched up. Must run. I should be attending to something else post haste.

well that makes sense! Sorry not trying to offend just wasnt sure how to take that....I have had people not believe I just do what I do with nails....it REALLY isnt a big deal...I do everything with them or without em...If I break em so what I put more on later when I do a manicure and often am so busy it takes days to get around to it....the beautiful ameraucana chick in my avatar WAS being held by me and those are my Valentines day nails....also my anniversary!
love.gif
I do my own nails...I change them about every three to 4 weeks. yes I stitched the baby with them and never even thought about the nails....sure thought about hurting her though....cant we come up with some kind of local or general for them...

I wondered if it was so inept at catching the first bird, that as each one got away from it and it would try for another. This isn't the method these birds use. It should have swooped in , grabbed one and be off. So far I have only lost one birds to a hawk that swooped in then up up and away. I would go for the heavier netting as other hawks may try as well, as they can't apparently see the netting. Or hang cd discs-- supposed to keep them away. or drape a rope large enough to see. THese were ideas I read about but have not tested myself.

Been there, done that. It is ok to remove the eggs, and remove the water. I did my first time hatching. Remember the hen gets off for a 30 minute hiatus, pretend the hen is off the eggs and fix the incubator up to your liking. In my styrofoam incubator, it took a few days to completely dry out. But I was rewarded with a 50% hatch my first time incubating!!

Wow, if I had known that I would have such an awesome experience with hatching, I would have done it sooner. I have one white egg that I decided to monitor since they are easier to candle and this is my first time hatching. I took it out tonight, into the pitch darkness of my bathroom where I have been (attempting) to candle my eggs, and there under the paper thin shell I could see a tiny heart beating. I have NEVER felt so humbled as when I thought about how I was holding that small life in my hand. I actually got a little emotional! Geez, I'm probably going to be a wreck when I start a family! Lol Thank you to everyone on this thread for helping me (and everyone else) through this hatching experience, even though it has just begun!

It is very humbling and I'm awed every time.

Dear Lord! I saw the pics of you holding that hawk and nearly had heart failure! I'm sad that he savaged your flock and glad that he didn't bite you. I hope little Splenda and Princess will be okay.

That was definitely not normal hawk behavior; even when hunting to feed their babies, they kill then fly it back to the nest before going out for more. The game wardens will probably test him for disease before releasing him back into the wild, just in case. Your hens might not lay well the next couple weeks, either. After a dog burst into a couple of my pens a few weeks ago, the hens nearby stopped laying and are just now getting back to egg production. (The dog was dispatched shortly after the attack.) You don't look like hellooo in the pics; you look like Momma Thundercloud about to strike. Mr. Hawk better consider himself lucky not to die on the spot!

Ok so here are the pics the kids took when it happened the Hawk is very much alive as he was when I snatched his *** up off the ground! I am the one holding him and I frankly look like hellooo but had been doing farm chores all day, I am angry and half strangled with grief ...(I know some people don't get that, over a chicken, but the one I will post at the end is my Little Splenda chirping happily on my leg the day the HAwk went in her coop and tried to KILL her and she was smart enough thank God to hide under the little gang plank that goes outside she was frozen in fear...did I mention she is back in the dang house?
Update on Princess....she is rattling when she breaths....so I gave her a shot of Tylan 50 and a syringe og my concoction for sick birds nutra drench, baby parrot food,a bit of sugar. Vit E, polyvisol will be alternated to help her feel better I also go in and give her nice clean water thru a syringe so I know she is drinking...she can't stand but she will protest a bit and is sore...but the tried to flap her wings when I set her down earlier....she wont eat on her own at all but "looks" at it like she is thinking about it a little....so we will see. She is still alive. The incisions look good and the drain holes aren't oozing or anything. and there is no heat....wonder if I should should get some penicillin or something? I HAVE some for horses.....mmmmm
Here is the hateful Beast.
trying to explain size to Authorities.
.
HE was trying to fly upside down

I was trying not to cry

That is the coop behind me, that is the front of the coop where the layers are, not a chicken in sight! If you go around the back of that coop is the right side coop which is inside the door you can see and to the right. the pop door for that yard and coop is in the back low to the ground...where he went in.mind you this hawk flew into the pop door, inside the coop! where horses and people all over coming and going...I have read about predators we "TALK ABOUT PREDATOR PROOFING"all the time!!!! WE have the coop on a concrete slab so nothing can dig!!! NEVER THOUGHT THE HAWK WOULD GO INTO THE COOP through a pop door I am still just stunned...

My sweet Splenda..we don't even know what she is!!
