I had 7 out of 8 today looking good! This is my first time, so when I saw a tiny movement I freaked out. I thought it was my imagination but it's not, is it? Fluttering. Very exciting!

You have enough room. Really, you do. Just go outside and look around and figure out the best spot.

I do not. Stop that! I only have .62 of an acre! Emus need more space than that! And I bet they can go over a 5 foot fence. CERTAINLY at a dead run down a terraced yard, launch themselves right over it onto the street. Nope, nope, nope, not enough room.

I'm so glad to see these photos, and happy to report that I have some eggs that look like that! I was totally confused, because there is that large light area at the bottom of the egg, and all I could imagine is that it was the air cell somehow developing on the bottom, which didn't make any sense.
I think my shipped eggs have some quitters, but I won't toss them unless they smell, because I have very little confidence in my candling ability.
One good thing about hatching is that it slows time down. Normally, weeks fly by, but waiting for eggs to hatch seems to take forever.

I think what you are seeing when canceling is that the yolk is actually in the middle of the egg, so you will see what looks like and air sac at the bottom which in reality the yolk has moved a little. If you candle from the top side you you will see air sac, candle from the bottom and see a clear spot it is filled with fluid. I have some that looks like that and my eggs aren't shipped they came from my girls, it depends on where the yolk is sitting when canceling if you see the clear spot on the bottom!

Good news or bad news? Ok, good news first.

The eggs in my homemadebator that have had the wild temp swings including dropping to 93 and feeling cold...all good. What I mean is, there were a few clears that never even started, no blood rings and of the veining in the light eggs the embryo is moving around fine! I didn't exactly candle them, I just shined the light on the top except for the clears I actually took out and held. But I still put them back. I'll pull them next week along with any others that are no good. I think the problem with this bator is its in the living room and my kids keep cracking it open to look and not shutting it properly. This will be remedied soon. (I just caught them tonight, DD (4) was explaining to DS (1.5) that we eat the chickies from the small eggs (quail) and beg daddy to keep the rest.)

Candled my LG that had wild temp swings in the beginning and was way too low in tempswhich I discovered once I used the meat probe which is WAY more accurate...and I candled those briefly on day 3 and had a few veins but most were clear. Well, now at least half have dancing embryos! Unfortunately none of the seramas in that one are developing and most of the Gabbard farms in both incubators are clear.

Here's the bad news. So now we move to the hovabator. I bought it and was going to move the eggs from the LG into the hovabator...then somone mentioned slippery fingers and I decided to wait until I started pulling eggs. Plus I wanted to make sure it was 100% stable in temps which it was. Today after my 93 degree scare I moved a bunch of eggs into the hovabator. A few hours later it was at 102 and I turned it down. Checked again, 103...turned it down. Finally it held steady at 101. Last time I checked was 4pm. I just checked at midnight. 107!!!!!!!

I opened it immediately and it felt like an oven...I thought to myself...self you've gone and done it, there's no coming back from this. I candled the eggs and sure enough, it looks a recent death in most of the light eggs. You know what I mean, the veins aren't distinct they're getting that smudgy look to them. But...a bunch were clear, so I didn't kill those today! Woo-hoo! And I had two that look good, but the embryos weren't moving. That's ok...i tell myself that they're in shock but will survive. I didn't pull any of those eggs either, but i now regret buying this bator. I'm sure at hatching time, I won't...since I don't want to hatch in my homemade bator and would like a hatcher.

yes they were sitting on a slice of bread. Sure glad they hauled them to the flor and not my keyboard which was sitting right under them
