Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I already candled.. waiting till day 10? what fun is that? :) So far six clears (all one type so probably not fertile - and I checked them again today to be sure) and one blood ring (a chantecler). My leghorn eggs have some ANGRY red embryos! Wow, with big white eggs I can almost see through them without a flashlight. :p

Here's my submission for the baby contest. Here is Cooper at 2 months old. He's an Australian Shephard/Brittany Spaniel mix. No tail

I have enough room for an emu! I even have a fence all the way around the back yard; just have to extend the wire fencing to the top of the posts, and then the overhang that deters the detainees from becoming escapees. I can get to the back yard through the house, or through three different gates. There is plenty of shade as well as sunshine, and loads to see all around.

*sigh* I have 15 cats, 4 dogs, and all my chickens to feed. Not sure I could afford an emu on top of all that.

get one! Why not? I would if I had the property! Like Kathy said, they make friends over the fence with their neighbors..umm, I mean your neighbors.

Over the years I've accidentally killed more than one egg.

Since I set the rule of candling only on day 10 and day 18, I haven't killed any.

So I'm a klutz that doesn't have fun........ and a lot less guilt now too...

I'm guessing I'll have about 44 eggs left after candle 1, and that I'll hatch somewhere between 25 and 31.

I know, not very positive after setting 74 --- I just know past history and shipped eggs, and this is the first year that I haven't had any of my own eggs to put in.

BUT... I'm still eggcited to see what I get!!

Just candled my eggs. I tossed about 7 blood rings. :( Mostly my black and blue silkies. It's not looking to good for those and it saddens me because that is what I really wanted. I can not see through my ameraucana eggs too dark but one. And I can say 25 eggs I know for sure are good and developing.
I know your pain, I had to toss 7 eggs the other day. Blood rings. Wish I had candled earlier, maybe I wouldn't have had as many blood rings.

Darn! Only 44? And here I guessed you would have 49 hatch!! Oh well, like you said, you will have babies to see for sure. And soon!

I had to laugh at my wife the other night talking with Boston and his wife... she said you know the last few days before hatch, he just goes insane... YA THINK?!

Just made my way thru 400 posts! Take a day off and you pay. Busy day yesterday. I had to move a foster horse to a foster to adopt home. Hooked up the trailer and went to get gas. Noticed that a had a low tire on the trailer and decided to go home and use my new compressor instead paying 75 cents for air. (need to get the GPS I forgot too) Spent half an hour in the pouring rain trying to get the tire blown up. Finally decided that something was wrong with the value stem since tire wasn't blowing up and pressure gauge wasn't working.
Went in and called all folks involved, Person I was taking horse to was was ok with waiting today to get horse, person picking horse up from was--"I don't know what you for work, but horse must be gone by dawn Tuesday" Geez, I told her trying to get tire fixed--on a Saturday morning when the world is getting new tires on there cars-- and would be there on Sunday since we were under Tornado and Severe Thunder storm watches for the afternoon. So I went out jacked the trailer up took off the tire, disconnected trailer from old truck and went to find a place to get the tire fixed. Found a tire place that only had 6 cars in the lot and turn the truck off. Should not have done that, truck very persnickety and won't start again for at least 20 to 30 mins after running. Hey I thought it would be a while them to get to me with all the others in line. Had my first good luck for yesterday, The guy behind the counter went out pulled my tire and took it right in. three minuted later he brought it out put it back in the truck and said have a nice day!

He wouldn't let me pay him. He replace the little metal valve and put air in it. I had to sit in the parking lot for another 1/2 hour to get the truck started again. Was able to get the horse moved before the worst of the bad weather and he is at his new place with bunch of teen aged girls to dote over him. Got home and was making a sandwich and hear a glass cracking noise and run to the living room or as it is know around here as the Chick nursery-- houses the incubator, hatcher, three soon to be four brooders as well and the usual furniture. Silly Ninja cat was climbing up the bator AGAIN to lay on the warm glass and broke it. AGAIN. This time instead of going for cheap glass I decided to look at thick plexiglass. The type I wanted came in a big sheet that was $20.00 and buy the whole for the piece you want. ugh. Looking farther, I decided to go for a thinner piece and double it. The nice man at the Lowe's store went to cut it and found a piece that he cut the night before laying on the bench. It was the thickness I was first looking at and the right width. He cut me a piece of the at NO charge,

Got that fixed and decided to buy a lottery ticket. Used up all my luck.. didn't win the lottery.
