Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I don't mind eating them..I just mind killing them..and the idea of ripping the feathers out! Oh its awful. I hadn't seen the roo since he crowed this morning and boy...between yesterday and today I swear he's a completely different bird. Its like he hit puberty overnight. He is suddenly strutting and super alert. Before he was the most scared and he is still skittish but now he is trying to herd the other two when my dog comes near. The funny thing is my lead hen is the one that takes on the dog and attacks my dog daily. And she could care less if the dog comes near but the roo suddenly wants them to leave and follow him but she doesn't seem to like that very much. The other hen will follow him though. Its sooo weird...kinda like he found his voice so now he feels manly. Is this normal? And he's never been aggressive ever except the other night when I was going to move them into their coop and he bit me. I hope he never attacks DD or DS...because they love the chickens. its a wonder they aren't obese because my daughter tries to feed them anythnig and everything she can.

I'm going to call around to butchers to see if they'll process him. I'm not sure how I'll feel about eating one of my own...but if I want to be farmer I need to man up...and get it done by someone else!

He'll probably end up in the freezer for 6 mo. too!

I forgot who posted about wanting to eat the kitties but that was downright hilarious!

@ greeneacre -- rehome the cat and you'll get luckier...

lol.png
Can't rehome that one. Is DS's cat and he can't have her where he is living now.. She grew up unspayed in an apartment full of DS's buddies( ages 19 to 20 ) He moved in with them and had to move out in less then a month and brought cat with him as the real owner couldn't take her. She got back to my place and had to have the full vet treatment. She is our Watch cat and keep an eye on things. Hates the UPS man and will growl out the window at him as he has the audacity to get out of his truck and run up the driveway to drop off packages.

update on princess!
Ok so she got her stitches out and the wounds look great! Dry and healing really well no weeping or sweeling and she acts like she is feeling great...she got to go back out to the coop yesterday and sleep with the other silkies...maybe we are reading into it but all the silkies huddle now and don't seem happy out in the coop so we are moving them this week end hopefully into their own coop up here by the house...I will post pics of the progress on building our silkie house. They just seem scared now ....only want to come put when we are there ..AS a matter of fact all the bantams are like this too they wont come out unless we are there and go back in when we leave the yard...amazing...so they are being brought up with the silkies...near the house and activity and a lcosed yard smaller for them so they will feel more secure....gotta go work guess I'll catch up later...wish I knew what was going on with the contests and stuff...everyone is sooo talented and creative....my vote on the egg art (sorry)

ould be #10 as that was amazing!!!! how was that done
For those of you not fortunate enough to have gestating equines at your home, mares are notorious for being very secretive about foaling - a good adaptation for a wild horse, as they are completely helpless for a period of time during foaling, and don't want to give the predators a hint. It is, however, extremely frustrating for mare owners, as you have a very short amount of time to intervene if there is a problem with delivery. Mares can "hold it" until they are completely alone. Owners develop a look about them that "mare stare" describes completely.

Brings back lots of foaling memories. Lots of waiting and I did have one mare that was absolutely determined to foal with out anyone around. With her second foal for me, she started layig down an hour after her daughter in the stall next to her foaled. and hopped right back up when I came in. I knew she wanted to foal so hung around until dawn when I had to go to work. I put her out with the other horses to keep try to keep her from doing it while I was gone. She lasted the day and foal right after eating her dinner at 8:30 pm the next day.

I won't have time tomorrow so I'm candling about 15 hours early.

TOTALS....................................................... 23 in the can, 51 remain.

To be fair, the eggs from Maryland were shipped the furthest... That said, I've hatched many of Kathy's eggs in the past and have always had
more than 50% after first candle. This is a first. I'd have to guess that there is a problem in the Sumatra pen... maybe it's just not warm enough yet.

I usually have about 30% not hatch after first candle so I'm expecting about 29 to 35 chicks. I'll be happy.

I might come close to guessing the number of your chicks to hatch.

THIS is just the sweetest thing ever!!

Kahtyinmo... you are getting me to think very differently about my Emerald Eggie. Stop it.

Just back from surgeon, spent more time sorting out insurance at the desk than actually talking with the surgeon, who doesn't feel qualified to remove the mass and wants to refer us to yet ANOTHER specialist -plastic surgeon. He DID however say that he didn't believe that it is Hodgkins!! Although, he couldn't be sure until the mass was tested. :( I'm needing a little more strength to handle this terrified/angry young lady, who is missing yet ANOTHER day of work only to be told..... um, still not sure. Thanks for hearing me out, feels a little funny sharing this here, almost like showing up at school in your undies. Just need to tell someone, the kiddo isn't into sharing with our friends n family. Best not to till we know something for sure.

My husband has as alarm on his phone thats a rooster crowing loudly and quickly over and over...so I had this dream that it was going off and he was late to work. I popped awake and half asleep thought, oh no! his alarm is broken. It sounds funny. Then I realized one of my 3 pullets was crowing. Guess one is not a pullet after all.
hit.gif
I had posted pics about a month ago and everyone definitely thought they were definitely pullets. I am not allowed roosters and DD wants to eat it! Ahhhh!!! I can't kill anything...I want to be a farmer and can't kill it. How do you guys do it? But...it was such a quiet crow. Instead of the loud, lusty UR,UR,UR,UR, URRRRRR! That I'd always heard it was. It was more like...imagine George Takei voice saying Oh,Oh,Oh, Oh, ohhhhhhhhh. It wasn't loud..and to be honest the only way to describe it is to liken it to what a Gay rooster might sound like. Is that normal? Cuz...I think I can get away with having a quiet gay rooster...I doubt anyone would hear it. Even though DD has her heart set on it. She also wants to feed the 'dead chickies' meaning the clear and quit eggs to dog. Is it normal for a 4 year old to be so morbid? Or am I just a wimp? And those of you that do scramble the eggs for the chickens do you also do it with the early quitters?

Kids are pretty straight forward. THey say what they think. Not right. Not wrong. Feeding clears to the dogs is just recycling to me. But maybe not to you. Feeding the quits? Those I bury to recycle. Maybe someone else recycles via a dog; because of possible bacteris counts, I do not feed these. ( I cook all meats and eggs I feed my animals; just seems prudent to kill bad bacteria.)

You are not a wimp. Caring for food animals, as pets or for food, brings special challenges.

As for your rooster? He's just a teenager warming up!!!!!

I just wanted to share my GREAT chicken weekend. I sold 17 chicks/pullets YEAH !! room for more.

I had 3 different batches of SHIPPED eggs hatch

SCG - Super EE and EE Turkens 10/12 hatched
Bantam Amer. 5/6 hatched
Shizzles and showgirls 4/8 hatched

I consider that success for shipped eggs.

And I sold out of ALL my eggs hatching and eating

Hope everyone else had a great weekend as well.

Did you ever get to eat them?

Awesome, hope you got 1 more turken... The brown ones I sent featherz were clear... same freakin' hens eggs I sent you. I checked her egg yesterday and it was fertile, so I'm not sure what's going on here in turkenville. Really good luck, then really bad luck. I'll blame it on the rooster, and eat him.
