I agree with Renee about the heart problem. The purple comb is a symtom of lack of oxygen (I've seen this from the Cornish X meat birds that I've raised for the freezer) and have seen rapid death once the comb darkens. I would have to think it was something she was born with that manifested at this time, most likely not related to her broodiness or something she ate or anything you did.

nothing raised in this house is ever going to do yard work, this we know.

...but you have to play to win!

What?! Well that explains why I am not a millionare yet. Dang!

So anyway, I take care of the skunks by default. And I will never, ever get away with anything.
Oh :) My DH is that way about diapers. I would never be brave enough to shoot a skunk, I would probably just make it mad and pay for it in the long run.

When I was in junior high my friend used it to keep her stud horse from being able to smell her mares. I've used it on my dogs when a female is in heat.

That seems like a good trick!

What?! What did I do? I never win anything, or guess anything, or even get picked randomly...ha...going to find LareePQG! Way cool!
Congratulations!

. I think it is why I have trouble keeping my weight up to a good level. I need to find a diet I can eat that will put some weight on me with out adding sugar

. Sometimes when I am doing a lot of hard "Yard Chores" My weight will really drop down and then I'll use a lot of sugary things to get the calories to get it back up

Did you have the 8 hour glucose test done??? Very often just a lifetime of eating the typical AMerican diet is the road to diabetes. It has 4-5 stages. Sugar is bad, bad, bad. Along with the refined carbohydrates that masquerade as our food. LOL Skip the sugar to put weight on. Sugar causes the insulin spike that lead to diabetes and arthrosclerosis and high blood pressure. Many foods cause sugar spikes which causes insulin spikes for many people.

Melissa Rose, you just need more calories, plain and simple, to do all the hard work! Eat more good food, like steak, green vegie salad, a potato, brown rice. I love the sweet stuff, I;m a carbo addict, and I used to make homemade bread. If I start to eat these things I cannot stop until it is gone. All gone. So my best bet is to not eat it and there fore prevent the craving for more and the swing in blood sugars which make me eat more. THis doesn't happen if I stick to eggs, steak, fish, green leafy lettuce, green beans, greek yogurt and the like.

A K Michelle,I'm not dreamin of my EMU, I'm dreamin of Kathy's EMUs, nothing raised in this house is ever going to do yard work, this we know.
Jessshan8: Cool Incubator plan, looks like a job for DH ~ can you guarantee he'll get shocked?

Tell him to move the thermo a bit. If he touches both screws while it's plugged in, he WILL get shocked. I DO NOT know this from experience.

So sorry about Black Betty, SCG. :(

And I agree that really strong skunk smell is sickening. Which is why I found my sister's comment rather annoying when she came to visit one time. Having lived in Alaska for quite some time, where apparently, there are no skunks, she said, "oh wow! Skunk smell, I haven't smelled that it so long. I really miss it".

I hate skunk smell with a passion. SCG, YOUR BF and I have something in common.

I will never win the lottery. I don't waste my money buying tickets.

I did some fur trapping this last winter. I caught, dispatched and skinned 2 skunks. After the first one, I told people it's not as bad as you would think, very pretty fur. That second one though....oh! He sprayed four times before being dispatched. I was using a revolver and was shooting from a distance for obvious reasons. I shot once and waited, nothing happen and he wasn't moving. So...you know, ya gotta get in close to check things out. He was just fakin it and turned and sprayed me as I was retreating backwards and firing again! I tried to get close as I didn't want to miss again. Did you know they can spray like 20 feet?! Finally, eyes watering and the stench just kickin my butt I took steady aim and he gave one last spray! My wife was not happy that week! My favorite camo hunting suit is still hanging on the fence outside. I'm not sure if it is ever allowed back in the house. I get to enjoy it all one more time as I am getting ready to tan all the furs I caught. I'm not one to waste things no matter how retched they may be.

She'd have been 2 this April. She was laying regular up to being broody. She was "broody" for about 3-4 days (walking around puffed up and clucking) before she finally sat on the nest, so I knew it was coming. She's not thin or bony at all... She was warm when I took her off the nest today. I've flashlighted her the best I can without disturbing her dying, and I don't see any wounds or lice/mites.
Her entire body is cold right now, even though the house is 75 and I'm right next to the wood stove (that's on). Her breathing is shallow, her head is hanging down off my lap and her comb is now purple.
She has no power to move her body at all.

Oh well. It stinks and I care for her, but she wasn't one of my favorite hens, although seeing her puffed up and broody always made me laugh. I'd have a mental breakdown if my favorite hen died, so I consider it lucky that it was Black Betty.

I am sorry to hear about your hen, too. Also agree that it sounds very much like heart issues - most likely a heart attack that was not instantly lethal.

I'm not a coffee drinker either. Just don't like it! I do drink tea but it's usually herbal tea since I am hyper enough without caffiene. I hate the taste of alcohol too. I can stand it if it tastes sweet and has almost no alcohol in it but as most bartenders have said "why bother then?". I used to perform in clubs and folks were always wanting to buy me drinks. Imagine their disappointment when they ask what I'm drinking and I reply "hot water".

Hey, warm water is a singer's best friend!

I thought when I got older that I would learn to like wine, or some kinds of alcohol anyway, but my palate never matured.

DH doesn't drink and I quit after college--time to be resposible. So recently a good friend ask DH and I to go for beers. What a kill joy. We don't drink, so we didn't go out all together. We're still good friends though. I don't drink coffee very often any more. I sleep way better without it and my bladder is much less leaky with out it too. I enjoy a decaf cup once in a while.

My first mare had me paniky. DH and I set up a sofa chair, TV and blankets, all for me to sleep in my mares stall. As I remember it about midnight I was pretty tired and was trying to snooze. My mare kept nickering and I just wanted her to be quiet. It finally dawned on me she was calling to her unborn baby. WEll I cleared out her stall almost in time!! My girls trust me I guess. Her daughter foaled 8 pm at night, about dinner time here in the summer months. EVery mare is unique.

Vicks VapoRub really IS what pathologists use in autopsies if they are not smokers or coffee drinkers.

<*evil grin*>

...Hey, I've just had a lot of experiences in my life.....

I have three stallions and they live near the mares. I'll use the vapor rub next time, though I think the boys know when the mares are hustling them.

However, she still had a prize to give away.

She used a random number generator to choose a random post number, and will give the prize away to the poster of the random number chosen.

The winner is... Cynthia12 on Post # 6635

Congratulations, Cynthia! You posted and won! Please PM LareePQG your mailing address.
