Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

On the diabetes conversation, remember that nuts are a great source of good fats and oils, and they can certainly help with weight gain. Also diet-related, for everyone with allergies out there, dairy thickens mucouses so it is terrible for people with bad seasonal allergies - especially folks whose allergies result in sinus infections and such. If you are suffering from allergies right now, lay off the dairy for a few weeks at least. It will help with cramping as well... I've been off diary for two years now, and while I used to have the worst allergies of anyone I'd ever met, we have high-pollen alerts every day now and I am fine.
Nuts and OO.

THis is very interesting. I gave up milk because of the high lactose content and still eat cheeses and yogurts. While I don't think seasonal allergies have been a problem , I am allergic to chickens and horses, which surround me. I take flonase everyday to combat the effects. ANd loratadine as needed. I can give up dairy for a couple weeks to see if it helps. THank you for the tip!

French Black Copper Marans are hatching

I set 20 and 13 developed and made it to lockdown. They had their first pips last night and three hatched while I was at work. Two more have hatched tonight and I see two more pips.

On a Marans thread someone posted that their Marans were like clock work: first pips on day 21. Hatching started on day 22 and finished on day 23. If so, I have at least one more day!

This pictures shows the Water Weasel Probe with the Brinsea Spot check in it.

This little guy seems hungry!
The red in the bottom is the dyed water. I like the red color better than the blue or green. I can see the water level better with it.

Here is one of my wildlife pals:

This guy is a regular at dinner time. He could have sprayed me many times but so far he's been calm around me. What you can't see in this picture is the opossum in the green garbage can on the right

He at least has moved out!

She has been broody for a couple of days. The eggs or chicks in question are the eggs I have set for the Easter hatch. I was thinking I could put eggs under her on Monday that would hatch on Friday or Saturday, or just give her a couple chicks after they hatch. If that is not enough time, I may just give her a couple fresh eggs.

If you know she is serious, give her the eggs at night when she is settled on the nest. Slip out whatever she has been on (I use golf balls) and put the warm eggs from the incubator under her. If she is in with the main flock, you run the risk of other hens laying in the nest or her getting into the wrong nest when she's off to do her business.
SuperChemicalGirl posted a screen she puts over the opening to the nest to prevent this from happening.
I don't like the idea of "grafting" after they've hatched, some hens just don't "get it" like Renee mentioned, although some people are successful.

My sister in law did this and it made a world of difference for her.

SCG - Sorry about your hen.

As far as skunks are concerned, I've used Siberian Huskies as my "traps", they aren't live traps though. You end up with a dead skunk, and a proud dog, that doesn't understand why he can't come into the house. The yellow/green on his cheek area is the point blank spray.

Oh man do I ever want those isbars!!! Pick me, pick me!!

Just checking in to say GOOD NIGHT.. .it was a VERY, VERY LONG DAY. Did I say I can't wait until SUNDAY?

AH CRUD!

I was hoping you'd have more than that. No SPPRs huh? I had someone hatch one out a couple of weeks ago after shipping, so I was hoping they'd hatch for you. If you get that Phoenix egg to hatch, I'll send you a couple more so you can try for a pair.

I've only gotten one purple egg in over a week. I'm kind of hoping I'm just not seeing a nest. My broody from a couple of weeks ago is back in the neighbors yard, so she probably started another nest too. It would be cool if I could find a nest in my own yard and see nothing but purple eggs and the hen that's laying them.

I'm sorry you had any clears at all.
Deb, was your submit button stuck or is my computer being wonky?

What an evening...I wanted to submit what I had left in the incubator and lo and behold but my Chickens rule the roost book is MIA! Thats where I wrote what I put into the bator. It is also where I wrote the post number that I put on here! GAHHH Try sorting thru 8000 posts to find one on rural internet. Finally found out though that you can pull up all of your posts under your user page! That only took about 15 minutes. Too bad I spent about 2 hours before that flipping back pages. Sooooo Here goes..........

***Note I do have 4 or 5 that are questionable, either too dark or may be quitters. If it didn't have an obvious blood ring or obviously clear it stayed
