Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I had a chick in the bator that was stuck on his back so I opened it to get him out and put him under a light and the smell smacked me in the face. So I have a rotten egg, I also have 2 eggs that pipped. Do I leave it until they hatched or do I look for it now? I know I already opened it but it will take me a bit longer to find a rotten egg out of about 30, then to reach in and grab a chick.

I wish there were a rule book for incubating lol.

Open it and find the egg quick!! If it blows it could endanger every egg in there.

It should be fine for your other eggs if you add a hot wet paper towel after getting the bad egg out. That will boost your humidity back up right away.

I love this! And thank you. I'm going to show this DH when he gets home. So he knows why I love this community so much!

so, DS woke up with I guess Night Terrors last night. Over 45 minutes of the scariest time of my life. He screamed and thrashed and slammed his head into the floor and objects over and over again. If I tried to hold or restrain him he'd hit and kick me and thrash worse. I finally got scared after he slammed his face so hard he bloodied his nose and the slammed into a tissue box and cut his face. I decided to take him to the ER. Then my friend was on her to stay with DD while I took him the ER and it stopped. Didn't wind down..just stopped. Then he went to sleep. His face today looks like he was in a boxing match. But its like nothing happened. and then I went to mcdonalds for a coffee and got rearended in the drive thru. It hit hard enough to snap my head forward and I bit the crap out of my tongue. But DS was fine and my bumpers a little banged up but not as bad as his. He got out of the car and I could tell he was crippled and he was old and just shaking. I thought he was going to have a heart attack. Apparently he has a bad leg and it slipped off the brake. I reassured him we were fine and so was my car. I told him we didn't need to call the cops or insurance or anything and he was so relieved but I could tell he was so shaken up and embarrassed. Poor guy. So...I am home exhausted but can't stop looking at my bators. Can't we just lock down now???? Not that it would speed things up. :(

I've suffered from Night Terrors but I was older (highschool - college). The last incident was the scariest and it took my dad a while to get me out of it, but not before I slamed myself into a couple of walls and the refridgerator. He had to take me down in the kitchen to stop me from seriously injuring myself. :: sigh :: Thank goodness I haven't had one since.

I am glad I am not home. I would be staring at my bator too. Doesn't stop me from thinking about them....

Ok I did. I pulled 6. Not sure if they were all bad but they had a smell. One of them had broken a quarter size hole in the shell but didn't get the membrane broke, it didn't smell but it was clear the poor thing was dead. The hole was on the bottom so I couldn't see it.

So I set 45 eggs. 1 I accidently dropped well before lock down but it was clear anyway, 6 pulled today, 8 chicks hatched, 26 eggs in the hatcher and 4 eggs in the bator waiting for lock down. All the eggs in the hatcher are on day 23 (all but one of my chicks hatched on day 22). So they will get until in the morning to hatch then I guess I'll throw them all out, clean the hatcher and lock down the other 4 eggs.

I am sort of upset. I had at least 8 bantam eggs that I saw moving around when I candled for lockdown, I even marked all the eggs I saw movement in including a couple of light colored LF eggs.... not one of them has hatched. All of my eggs that I couldn't see movement in but still thought were good I put a ? on them... every egg I have hatched came from an egg with a ?. Then I have all of the LF eggs that I just plain couldn't see in which is aggravating.

Right now I am at an 18% hatch rate. Better then 0 I guess lol.

I never candle my eggs long enough to check for movement, just for development, and very briefly - so all my eggs that hatch come from eggs that I do not see movement in. Just makes me uncomfortable handling the eggs any more than nescessary, and if I dropped them

while just seeing what is going on it would be very discouraging for me. The eggs are picked straight up, candled from the bottom without rolling them around, and placed back down again immediately. Seems like handling eggs makes me fumble more that normal.

Sorry to hear about the low hatch. My first hatch had 2 out of 12 develop and neither of the two pipped.
