Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I need some advice, please. I threw out an egg this morning that had pipped yesterday, hadn't progressed and was stuck to the bottom of the incubator upside down, bloody and without signs of life. However, a few hours later when throwing some more debris out, I saw the chick in that egg breathe, so I tossed it back in the bator. It's been there a few hours now and hasn't really moved much, but is still breathing. What to do? Help it out, leave it ? Waaaaaaaaaaaaa

Well, my Saturday-set hatch is underway. I now have 2 Blue Birchen Marans - they are not splash, so dark blue or black, and I am pretty sure already that one is a boy and the other a girl because the boy seems to have been hatched with a comb and wattles! - and a Brown Leghorn. One of my Speckled Sussex/Easter Eggers from my flock is also pipped. That leaves one more BB Marans, one more Leghorn, and two more mutts. Four Basque, one swap, and a Saturday-set bantam that I thought should hatch sooner remain as well, although I've pretty much given up hope on them. Still, I already have 18 chicks, so fair enough. My shipped eggs performed pretty terribly despite delaying turning, etc. Well, I'll total it all up after another day or so. We'll see what comes through.

I love these sweet, confident little Basques!

Many people hatch just fine in the LG--it does require a little more involvement to manage it. Ventilation is provided via the 8 holes in the bottom and the 8 on the lid. The red plugs are designed for humidity management according to the manual. Chookschick taught me to use he plugs to manage the temperature. Sorry you are having problems. Hope you will try again. If you really think you want to toss it, I"ll pay for shipping!

Good grief! I leave for a few hours and I have to go through 150+ posts to catch up!

My hatch is done. The last one, a Drekki Icelandic has leg and feet issues and may not make it but we'll see.

So, final tally?

How many chicks did Mahonri Hatch?

33!

In my case stupid is an accurate word.

I'm pretty sure I've killed off the 104 for this hatch and the over 200 others I have in there. I'm also sure that the same reason is why I lost the last 3 hatches. I used to get 100 hatches and then I'd be lucky if anything hatched, but then again I have had lots of problems with shipment and smashed eggs and eggs that didn't even develop.

So my stupidity stems from not paying attention and not to have noticed this whole time.

I have several thermometer/hydrometers and I do calibrate, but we had hatches going a;most 20 months ago when my husband was alive. He was the math Wiz so he figured out what was what and wrote corrections on tape. Well I didn't want to get rid of his part pf this and left the original tape, but I put fresh ones on when I recalibrate. These things were getting old and I decided to buy a new one last night. Stuck it in the Sportsman and it shot up to 91%! I looked at the others and realized I have been looking at the old tape, not where I have my changes. ???????????????? WT Heck?? OMG I've been drowning or drying out chicks. I was up till almost 5am trying to get humidity under control. First too high, then in the 40's then 66% and went to sleep. Woke up to 45%! Also I used the sportsman this time for hatching and although the racks are holding temps, the bottom reads 96??

I'm just sick. I'm leaving the house for a few hours ad I just hope something miraculous happens. I'm going to wait a couple of days, but then I have to candle all those other eggs and see if I killed off my next 4 hatches. I just can't believe it's taken me this long to realize what I've been doing for months. I'd call that pretty stupid.

I had 7 zips and 3 pips. All dead, except one :( Heat spike. I opened up the eggs, hoping for just one survivor. I was almost to the end, giving up hope, when I widened a pip and a beak tickled my palm. Rushed it back to the bator. Please ducky please!! Survive! One unpipped i left alone.. might have a chance.

I sure hope it makes it.
