Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I'm wondering if it's a lost cause.

I had a NH chick that had one leg perpendicular to the other behind it's back. For ten days I held it for every speck of food and every drop of water. It now runs!!! I couldn't cull it, because otherwise it was vigorous and wanted to live. I named it Penelope (for Penelope Cruz from the pirate movie, peglegged). Unfortunately, Penelope now is starting to develop a little color in the comb and wattles, so may end up Johnny Depp. But I put so much time/energy/care into this chick, it will have a pet home in the pasture with the sheep. It can't go into a breeding program, but I can't cull it either.

I am right there with you. Chick fuzz, parts of other eggs and other goo from the hatched ones is making me crosseyed.

One of the four Icelandic eggs now has a HUGE, very obvious pip volcano! YAY

I was afraid I'd end up with a singleton breed, of course it still might be two roos!

Well, both bators are cleaned and stored. and I'll probably buy another spot check before December.

I'll be giving Boston 4 of my Ameraucana chicks from my Ground Hogs Day hatch, then I just need to decide what stays and what goes from my NYDH, GHDH and then this Easter Hatch.

I will be selling a few from my laying coop in July to make room for the younger birds.

I've got to sell my Red Sussex pair before the roos starts crowing and I've decided that I either need to sell or eat my black Jersey Giant.... they are ALOT of feed to egg conversion!

I still can't decide if my SFH is a roo or a pullet, but it's huge.... I'd really love to keep it.

My hatch is complete with 16 out of 24. I am happy with the results wished more Lav's hatched but oh well. My first 4 came from 3 year old hens and the chicks are huge compared to the pullet chicks
Here is everyone

The 4 bigger chicks

The EE is front is my favorite. I am in

with the face!! My oldest has named it Brownie

I am dying to see how the chick in the back with the brownish/red face turns out. Hopefully she has an all black body with just the brownish/red face. There are 2 just like this and unfortunately I do not know who laid them

I did not see the egg they came out of.

I'm definitely jealous. My 15 EO eggs have yielded 8 chicks, and the other eggs have just been sitting silent.

Could have been the extra days of shipping (shipped Friday, arrived on a Wednesday) or maybe I did something. Dunno. All of the eggs from my flock hatched just fine, so I'm thinking it was just shipping.

Right now, Cup is in my shirt because the others were picking at him by his eye. I've got the baby parrot food and he's had one dose already. I figure I'll carry him around a bit, spare him the stress of being picked for a few hours, and feed him the parrot food every half hour or so.

Still just one chick and two somewhat more progressed pips in the incubator. I'm thinking it's running a bit cool and dragging out my hatch. It was very cold last night, so the house temps may have dropped a few degrees more than normal. The incubator is in the room with the thermostat and gas stove, however, so it should have been fine....
I only have 5 Basque from my 15, but I am still thrilled. Probably because my other shipped eggs, I only have 1 of 17, and one stalled out pip. There are still 6 Basque eggs in there. At least 2 of them looked good at lockdown, so I haven't given up yet. I hope your chick with the bad leg makes a recovery! I don't even know if I have any injuries. The incubator is packed, and I'm afraid to open it because there are a few pips in there. 16 of the 30 that made it to lockdown are out.

Sarah, sorry you had a bad hatch but glad you persevered into another hatch.

For the person with the injured chick leg, smear triple antibiotic ointment on it at least twice a day. I'd put it in a different brooder if you can so the other chicks don't pick on it. It'll take a day or two before it'll put weight on it.
Then you can start doing chicken physical therapy - I made her run a few feet to my hands then got crickets and mealworms when she was getting stronger.

Hi everyone i only got 14 out so far out of the 73 eggs that went into lockdown i have several pips and 1 zipping at lock down all 73 were alive and kicking what could have happened for them not to hatch is there still hope for them to hatch

I am LOVING all of the chick pics!!!!!
