Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Cutest Chick contest.....
Do we just post them here, or do we PM the picture to someone?
Post them here on the thread!

I'll have a link up shortly.... and eventually a POLL... if someone can instruct me on how to put one together in this new format.

Help?? What should I do for the leg??

Personally, I would probably cull this chick, but if you really want to try, I'd hobble the legs together with a bandaid and put the chick in a cup lined with paper towel. I've save one or two this way.

Can you all tell I'm 10 hours and 200 posts behind? YIKES.

Since I had such a bad hatch, a fellow BYC in my area just gave me 11 chicks!! I got a BLACK Ameraucana which is gorgeous!!!! And a favorite. Some white or what ameraucanas, light brahma and dark brahma and a dark faverolle. I'm in chick heaven right now!

You are going to love the Brahmas if you don't already have some. I love the double lacing on the darks. I had a dark roo who was my buddy. Poor boy disappeared one day. I think a coyote got him. Congrats on the new chicks!

Refraining from a final count until I see if this last hatcher survives. It hatched late, and then collapsed. It is still wet in the incubator, and I can see that it is breathing, but the chick is quiet and otherwise not moving around much. I did find it in a different place tonight when I checked on it. I am mentally prepared for it to be dead in the morning, but was encouraged to read about someone who had a chick hatch and not move for a full 12 hours, and then recover.
If it makes it, I will have Basque #6!

I know other people have said it but just give it time. I had to help my last chick out this morning. I left it all alone in the incubator to fluff up and get stronger all day. It didn't do much but sleep most of the day. This afternoon it was looking much fluffier and stronger so it is now in the brooder with the others. It is still slower than the zoomies that hatched yesterday but it is definitely holding it's own. Don't try to worry too much I am sure it will get there.

Well I pulled 32 eggs from the bator. I left 10, not because they looked good, but because the temp was dropping and I needed to stop candling. There is no reason for me to think that the 10 left will hatch, so I guess I'm done. I will leave those at least another day, maybe two. Some of the ones I pulled had a very black spot on one side of the egg about the size of a pea. Is that bacteria? It seemed to be just under the shell, and away from where the developement was.

Oh Wisher I don't know what it is that you are seeing inside the eggs but

X a bajillion. It sounds like you were doing everything right. I don't have any advice except please stay with us on the turkey hatch. You have the eggs already right? If so, let's get them going and see what happens.

My dad just culled it. Looking at it today and it can only open one eye and it's whole side is just off. That's no way for it to live. It wouldn't make it long anyways because it can't get to the food or water. :( I got one Silkie. Oh well. I got plenty of chicks now that Ksane gave me some.

Dsgard - I was getting turkey eggs from a lady I know locally. I decided to hold off since I thought my hatch was going to be late. Now, I don't know if I will get them at all. I have - correction, DH has two poults in the brooder with some store-bought chicks and I may just settle for those. I don't know if my nerves are ready for another hatch. Don't count me out just yet, I still have a little time to change my mind.

Can anyone tell me if a large snood on a week old poult indicates male or female?
