Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Any one else have brooder cry babies?

For me, it's almost always an Ameraucana. All of the chicks can be sound asleep, the cry baby will wake up and start chirping as loudly as possible because it thinks it's alone cuz all the others are laying their lifeless. Crazy cry babies....
One of my EO Basque chicks chips loudly until I go into the room where the brooder is an then quiets down. I am not sure which on it is, but I think the Chick misses me.

This morning I had to lift the Ecoglow to make sure they were all ok in there....

Edited to add: The chicks are in the walk in closet off of my bedroom. One of them woke me up about 3 am. I turned on the light to check on them, and they rushed out to eat and drink. Maybe the chick just wanted more food? These guys are eaters.

Great photo, too!!!

I am pretty pumped because, out of the 10 eggs I sent to Arizona for the swap, 9 hatched!!!

I had 2 roosters over 9 hens, fed them a breeder supplement I mixed for a few weeks before collecting eggs like we discussed, candled them before shipping as not to send porous eggs, and packed them following the Meeks Method. I am really pleased that it paid off.

My chicks are a bunch of little feathered pigs.

They love scratching around in their food and LOVE their clump of sod that I put in the brooder as per ChooksChick's suggestion. I will definitely be using that idea from now on. It gives them something to pick at, scratch in, climb on, and so forth and I am sure they are building up healthy immunities and getting some healthy bacteria in their gut.

I'm giggling over how mad that chick looks over being in that plastic egg. "I just got out of one of these, and you put me back in?!"

Today is my day 21, and when I went to check on my eggs at the school this morning, TWO had pipped. Oddly enough, one was a marans egg, which I was sure was going to be the last to hatch because it just looked behind.

I ended up with 21 chicks of 24 eggs set. So an 88% hatch rate. When is the Turkey hatchalong?? I have turkey eggs coming in the mail sometime this week, but they may be late. Update on my son: He is doing better and finally able to have jello, broth, and juice after having nothing for four days. He may be able to come home tomorrow. That would mean I can too lol been here since Fri, so ready to sleep.
