Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I put all of the candling pictures together here on my blog.

I haven't been as vigorous about photographing as I usually am, but I have a few.

This is my entry for the cutest chick contest (RC Brown Leghorn chick):

Although this one is pretty cute, too.

I ended up with 21 chicks of 24 eggs set. So an 88% hatch rate. When is the Turkey hatchalong?? I have turkey eggs coming in the mail sometime this week, but they may be late. Update on my son: He is doing better and finally able to have jello, broth, and juice after having nothing for four days. He may be able to come home tomorrow. That would mean I can too lol been here since Fri, so ready to sleep.

Just googled pics of Silkie feet. Ha! I thought that chick just had some sort extra toe growth goin on. Didnt know it was normal for silkies. AND I didnt know any of the eggs I got had a single smidge of silkie blood?! I got them all from my brother. I'm going to have to go over and see if I can figure out who that egg came from.

Sure hope I can report my total in time. I thought my hatch was over since my heat spike killed almost everyone :( After the last pipped chick came out I checked and one is still alive, but not internally pipped. Definite movement though.

I finally cleaned my home made bator out. I hatched out 12 out of 29. Four were clear that I could see and tossed early on. I had 13 eggs still in the bator. So I left it for three more days then picked two out to see what was happening and I was very upset when I opened them. They were dead but fully formed and that the egg sack obsorbed. I did 2 more and they were the same. I was too upset to open anymore. I just tossed them out and cleaned the bator. I am thinking I killed them when one of my babies already hatched climbed the fence and got into the fan. It was under the fan which was close to the floor and I had to get it out. I think the bator was open too long at that time. I couldn't let it stay under there and suffer.

so I killed the others doing that..........I ended up with 4 babies my sis ended up with 7 live babies. My ee eggs didn't hatch and one was opened that had a fully formed baby. I really wanted them to hatch. I have my brand new Genesis 1588 that is automatic almost, going now but I didn't put but 3 ee eggs in it.

sigh But I have some pretty blue eggs from BunnyMomma in there so that makes up for it.

I was given 3 green eggs from a hen who was a silkie x ameraucana. The 3 chicks were such a funny mix of traits, 1 had 5 toes each foot and muffs and beard, 1 has 4 toes each foot but feathered legs, a crest, muff and beard and turquoise ears, the last has an extra toe on one foot and big crest. I'm becoming a big fan of barnyard mutts!

Well Unless someone has had no hatch at all I will be in the running for the Worst hatch. I have one lone chick. Out of 32 set. All but 5 developed but died a few days before the lockdown. They were full developed but had lots of yoke left. Don't know what went wrong! The ones that died were mostly ameracaunas.

My one lone Silky chick.

I want to congradulate everyone that stuck in there even when things didn't go right and to those who had good hatches and those that didn't have great hatches.
It has been great fun for me and I learned sooo much. I hope next year when this comes around I will be able to join in again and have a better hatch myself. I am greatfull for what I got this time. It could have been worse.

My hatch was about like yours. The one chick that actually hatched out of 42 eggs died. It was deformed and never could stand up. I had a thermometer in there that was not reading right and I had some temperature spikes. I will try, try again and this time I have 2 thermometers in there and am watching it super close. Only 12 days to go on my ducks...

I candled last night and out of all those that didn't hatch there was movement out of 3 more eggs. So I left those 3 in to cook a little more. I reckon they aren't quite done yet.
