We had one of those growing up. My Dad used it for Cornish Crosses. Of course it was the1960s version and my not have has as many levels. there was also an incubator at the top.

Ron

Quote: I have had an incubator running non-stop since December on the set day for the NYD hatchalong. That's kind of a lie, I actually have three of them running.

Let me see, my electric bill has been hovering in the vicinity of $400 a month for many months now............incubators, brooders, heat lamps................hmmmmmm, do I see a connection???

Deb

You should invest in a ecoglo, those things are wonderful. It is well worth the money. I.think I may buy the bigger one. I just got my electric bill down to 67$ I thought the electric company gave me the wrong bill. No it was a actual reading. About fell off my chair.
AND CAN'T STOP HATCHING ANYTIME I WANT.

Funny you should say that, I already have the 50 on it's way, got the confirmation email last night (and the current code is FRESH). It's really only going to replace the heat lamp in my overflow brooder. Besides the three incubators, I have one of these.

But I sometimes have to kick the chicks out of the top heated brooder, into the middle battery. If I think they still need some heat I use a heat lamp. Now I'm going to replace that with the Ecoglow50 and it will work better all around. Once they get kicked out of the bottom battery, they are out to the shed grow out pen, then out to an outside pen.

Okay, I admit it, I am addicted.

As soon as you get new chickens, flip them up side down and dust them with poultry dust. Make sure to hit the vent area real good. Do this even if you don't see lice. Then keep them separated for three weeks of so and check them before letting them in with your flock.

Ok, I know I said this before, but once you get lice and mites, DE will not kill them. Funny thing, years ago Pyrethrum was considered organic. It comes from marigolds right? It is not that toxic. Also, it is very important that you use seven or something similar to spray the coops and pens. Do use DE after the mites are gone. I use Organic as much as possible.

The Die no Mite strips work by putting a little bit of pyrethrym on the chickens when they bump into it. With the Mites and lice, you are having a lower than normal production of eggs right? Let me know how much better your flock looks after they are treated and how much better your egg production is.

My hen that had symptoms of Mites is now laying again and looking good. I used ivermectin, Die no Mite strips and sprayed the coop with Seven.

Ron

Thanks!
Well, we're not sure where the lice came from, but we did add pullets to our flock. We quarantined them to make sure they had no diseases, but never examined them for lice. Stupid, I know. We can almost never catch a chicken except in the dead of night. You should have seen our chase scene yesterday

. I do know we had mites earlier. I'm hoping we can get them under control. For now, DH is insisting on organic methods. He has become the king of chicken dusting.

Being cognizant of the problem is the first step in recovery. . . I can't help you beyond that bit of wisdom (I'm busy looking for eggs)

We ran out to the barn really quickly before church this morning and the two boys were up and wobbling..

The little girl is still extremely weak.. I stayed up till 1:30 with her, got up at 5:30 to feed her and she does seem to be getting a little stronger but still isn't standing.. Just now, she ate pretty good.. hopefully she'll keep getting stronger..

I'm heading out to the barn now and we'll get some more pictures...

I bought a used one for my son when he was in 4H, three years ago when I moved I got rid of it (just the single brooder part). Admittedly, it had seen better days after being stored under the house for 15 years, but I really thought I'd have no use for it. I also gave away a barn full of rabbit equipment to the local 4H kids, his herd had numbered around 250 rabbits. Now I kind of wish I still had some of those banks of hanging wire cages, all the feeders, the automatic watering system (mostly for the water pressure regulator & all the piping) and the many show carriers. I could have repurposed quite a bit of equipment if I had known I was going to get back into poultry. Oh well, I made several 4H families very happy. The only requirement was they had to take EVERYTHING and haul it up the hill themselves.

You should have seen us putting it together when I ordered it. It came in 12 large boxes and had almost no instructions, just a schematic. We put together a couple of parts more than once,

I think just because it was so fun the first time
