11:40 PM and we have one little Marans pipped and feverishly working on zip. I noticed this baby had pipped around 6:30PM. This baby tried to make midnight but I think its going to take it a little while longer. Happy New Year!
It's 11:44 and I have 3 light Sussex out. Last one a couple of hours ago. The other two have already moved to the brooder where they can stand up. My second guy out had his left foot turned under so I took him out and made him a bootie. We'll see how it looks tomorrow.
The last hatchling is kind of slow to get up and around and has the little red protruding umbilicus. He has rested most of the time but just in the last few minutes he is perking up. The last of my four eggs is chirping but so far hasn't pipped.
These are sure cute chicks which is interesting because I know how ugly and gangling they are going to be in a few weeks since I have eight of them out back! The instant flock of Light Sussex I bought from GreenFire farms are between 9 and 11 weeks old. The bigger ones are getting pretty but, yikes, the younger ones are homely little things. Today was a big day for them. I split the 8 of them into 2 groups of four and separate pens and runs. I still don't know which one is my second roo. I'll have to post some pics on the gender forum and get some help. Paul said he sent 6 puulets and 2 roos. the big guy is obvious but beyond that I have no idea. If the last egg hatches I will have an even dozen Light Sussex!
And it's midnight now! Here's some New Year's cuteness!
