mail order chickens???

I love Cackle, but there are tons of hatcheries out there. Just google chicken hatchery and go from there. Most can send you a catalog by mail.

I love My Pet Chicken (another that is not a hatchery, but a middle man) but that is just because they have been so good to me and my girls (and boy) are so beautiful and healthy. Like someone else said, you will hear good and bad about all of them.

This is not necessarily true. We ordered from Ideal a couple of years ago, chicks arrived in 2 days from Texas to Michigan. This year we ordered from Meyer, chicks arrived in 2 days, from Ohio to Michigan, a mere 230 miles. When I asked the P.O. about it, they said if it is far away, they fly them from Texas to Detroit and then truck them over. From Ohio, they get sent on a truck the whole way. Oh and only certainly trucks can carry them, so it is not that quick.

I ordered eggs on ebay from two different sellers. Both came priority mail, just like the chicks. The eggs from Arizona (to MI) arrived in one day, the eggs from Iowa, much closer, took 3 days to arrive.

If you can get the breeds/qualities you want locally, from a healthy flock of course, then absolutely that's the best.

The virtue of mail-order is simply that you get access to kinds of things that don't exist in your area (or anyhow that you can't find there)

exactly.

We ordered chicks last spring from Ideal and they are now lovely hens. We also have a hen that came from another person at a swap(Chicken Stock) as a chick.

And now I have a small brooder(2 chicks) with Speckled Sussex and BYM chicks in it. And am waiting on 2 more chicks (DUccles) that were ordered by Twinlights from a breeder. I have plans for those chicks.

Another way to get chicks is find a local Chicken Stock/Swap and wander around to see what other people have and are selling.

I'll tell ya....I was sooooooo excited when the post office called and told me I had mail to pick up and I could hear my box "peeping" in the background. I ordered from Ideal 2 times last year and was very happy!
