Maine Chicken stocks, Swaps and shows August- Dec 2012 -- update is on post #125, p, 13

early coop in was tonight, coop in in the morning is 9:00 with the show starting at 9:30. if you are looking to buy, the early bird gets the worm, as they say. vendors will be setting up as soon as they coop in and the gate opens at 8:00 or earlier...
What time does the show start and what time does it go to? I live in Houlton and it will take 3 hrs to get there I was going to wait until my husband got home at 8:30am to leave. That means I wouldn't get there 1130-12 should i leave sooner?

I did make it. I got there around 11:45 and I had wished I stayed longer. My kids loved it, they kept wanting to pet every chicken or duck they saw. We watched some of the Jr show(I think) and my 6 yr old daughter said she really wanted to do that with her chicken. I actually felt bad as her chicken is an EE who was supposed to be an Ameraucana from a hatchery, but she's the sweetest thing anyway. It was neat to see how the judges talked to the kids to see what they knew. I wish I could find a 4H for my girls up here but they never call me back! I was disappointed to not see any standard cochins though- 'cept for the lone black Cochin. I wanna kick myself for not asking someone more about her. I wish I had talked with more people, sometimes I am kind of like a turtle

in it's shell when I am in big crowds.

My husband is thinking about showing with his Coronation Sussex we just have to figure out what we have to do so we can go. I see a lot of people being NPIP certified I think I get what it is(Pollorum free cert. right?), but do you have to have that to show? How does one get that.

yes in order to show at most shows, you need to have your flock tested and be certified NPIP.
for jr showmanship, the youth does not have to own the bird they are showing, but they do need to know about it (breed, general how to care for a bird, how to properly show it off) .
I was very surprised at the smaller turn out for large fowl. I've never seen that few entered. the call duck turnout was very good, 52 I think they said.
if you wrote down the exhibitor number for that large fowl cochin, you could call them later.
the spring show and the fair show, had a good number of LF and cochins too.
on the coronation sussex, I don't think they are a recognized color, so you can show them but you can't win any higher then best of variety. i show alot of "non standard" colors myself.

Maybe if I tell my daughter she needs to remember all this for a show she might actually listen

I noticed the number of call ducks I just love them they are so cute, every fair I go to I try and find them but there are not usually a lot. I hope someday I can move to a larger place where I can have them. They are so so messy but so so cute!
So do I send away for the NPIP testing or will my local livestock vet have that stuff? Is it a blood test and does it have to be drawn by a vet? I think I will definitely go to the show in May only I think I will be more prepared. At least I know a few things more now than I knew yesterday.

this is the club's website and there is a list of independent poultry testers. it is a blood test and you will have results that day as well as your slip showing your birds were tested. it is a yearly test.

the state will send you a NPIP card (when they get around to it, had my birds tested in june and I still don't have my new card)

For the record I would love to see some Coro Sussex... or buy a few even so if you don't show let me know because while you ARE far away I would like to get a few. I am glad to hear that the LF entries are usually higher and I am glad there are other people interested in showing LF.
There was a man there with some nice black cochins for sale. I wish I had gotten his name- nice man.

pm me where he was located, pretty sure I have a name for you on the cochins. as far as the coro sussex, keesmom raises those.
