Widget and all...there is a really great "how to" solar stock tank article that came in my email newsletter from Mother Earth News. I couldn't get the web address on my ipad, but I "pinned" the article on Pinterest. If anyone wants, pm me your email address and I'll forward the email newsletter to you. Keeps water liquid below zero in Montana.

I thought that might be why this thread was so quiet-because people were without power. We lost ours for a while (about 12 hrs) but nothing like what a lot of people are going through. Thank God! I told someone that we were without power and water, but had plenty of FRESH EGGS!

They are the funniest when it comes time to negotiate who uses what nest box and arrange themselves on the roosts at night.  Some girls will only use one box and stand there in line bawking until it's empty (or if they are a BR, they just get in regardless of who else may be there!).  Others are like Goldilocks and try all of the boxes before deciding which to use.  :)  What surprised me most is how busy they stay all day long and how loud they are!  They are constantly scratching, pecking and hopping around.  I wish I knew what all the different noises meant.  There's a coo, a trill, a bawk, a squawk, a low growl/grumble...really amusing!
hilarious! !! Can totally picture this!!

Merry xmas everyone!!!! Boy have the girls been upset and unwilling to come out of the coop these days... miss their cute little faces!!!

Glad to hear people are getting power back, finally! We filled many containers with water, but only lost for 3 hours because a car hit a pole. But our friends in Belgrade still have no power, after more than 2 days now. They have a fireplace and are cooking on camp stoves and the barbecue. We offered our portable generator, but they are sticking it out.

I am happy to see this snow, as it should provide a softer layer and more traction. Skiing has been rather fast and treacherous. And on Tuesday, I spent the morning pounding on the clear side of the hoop coop, breaking off a very thick layer of ice. It worked, but the snow around the coop is sloped and very slick, so I kept wiping out. I was fine, but the eggs in my pockets did not fare so well.
