Well... just witnessed one of the most disgusting things yet! One of my rocks just pooped a 4-inch roundworm. Gag! Wazine is my best bet, right?

Wazine is good for a first time wormer. It only kills round worms.

Well it is coming...yesterday I could smell it and today I could hear it too..... SPRING! the birds are singing this morning and I could feel it in the air. Thank goodness!

Thanks to those who insisted I check my local dump for compost... looks like mine offers an "all you can take" deal for $25 a season!!

I have the seedlings sprouting under a light and now I just need the 2+ feet of snow around here to melt so I can get my hands dirty and coax the chickens out of the coop again!!

Mustard: Re: the free mulch. Be sure to get it early. If I don't get mine very early in the season... ie: before I really have a place to put it, before most people start gardening, it will be gone. I really need to start my seedlings.

absolutely. I was told it is not usually available until May but I will be checking in!

Lazy Gardner, the males do have a rose comb and females have pea comb. I am basically between Farmington and Auburn. I often meet up with people to deliver chicks and eggs. I am sure I will still be breeding them.

I've never heard of males having one type of comb and females an other in a specific breed. Is this a sex linked trait?? I'm intrigued. How do you find their temperament and their egg laying?

Thanks, CoopChick and Quailtrail. I have the wazine in the water today and am trying to entice them to drink plenty! This was definitely a roundworm. Have been doing a lot of reading on wormers. Although I didn't want to, I have a feeling I will likely get into a 2x/year schedule. After the first dosing of wazine, I'll probably switch to a broad spectrum.

I jinxed myself, because last week I was noticing how good everyone looked and was acting. Then this week one of my rocks started keeping her tail down... in my limited experience that is always the start of something bad. It wasn't her, but another rock who pooped the worm. From what I gather, by the time the worms come out, they already have a big load of them... I hope I'm not too late. Wonder if worms are what killed my other rock last month.

I got 6 eggs out of 6 chickens yesterday and now I'll have to withhold for awhile. At least we'll have plenty of eggs to decorate for easter.
