Maine

I started with eggs I ordered from a breeder in MN. I then ordered eggs from another well known breeder in Ohio followed by receiving live chicks from my friend in MN. I am now a listed breeder of the Buckeye for the state of Maine; I have chicks available and will be at some of the swaps throughout the spring and summer. If I can be of help with any questions you may have just ask away.
Buckeyes are a breed that I'm interested in, maybe for next spring. Do you come to the Augusta swap?

Hi all, I am new on here and when it comes to all things chicken so excuse me if I am asking questions that have already been answered on this thread. I am hoping to get some chickens, our zoning only allows for up to 6 and I am unsure of what breed/breeds I should get. I am leaning a little towards Barred rock, Australorps, Orpingtons and Wyandottes at the moment and was wondering if any fellow Mainers could make suggestions when it comes to whats best for the climate here in Maine. Also any suggestions as to where I might find the chickens once I have decided what to go for, i'd quite like a mix of a couple of breeds so also knowing what breeds get a long would be good to know. I would like a breed that is sociable as I have two young children who will to be involved in their care.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to BYC! I have all of those breeds, right now (except for Barred Rocks, but had them last year) and they are all great! All of them have been great layers and have laid right through the winter (with the help of a couple extra hours of light in their coop). I also have an Easter Egger (or "Aracauna," is what Aubuchon Hardware called her) and really like her. Plus, she gives me about 5 "seafoam green" eggs a week. It's so hard to say which breed is my favorite. I love them all! They all have their own personalities. My Australorp is the shiest, but she's also on the bottom of the pecking order. I've heard and read that Buff Orpingtons tend to be the ones that get picked on but my two are the bosses. They are all so much fun to watch! I also have 2 boys (8 and 10 years old) and they handle all these birds. Last summer, they were each carrying a chicken around the back lawn. These pictures show how much my chickens started out being handled. They used to fall asleep in their laps.

I love wyandottes. I was hoping to get one in this hatch. I did, it's laced and frizzled and... it's a boy :-( Of course out of only three boys out of thirteen the one I had my heart set on would be one.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get some shavings or hay for my chickens?

It's not altogether close to you, but Ames Farm Center in North Yarmouth has shavings in stock. I also noticed a few bales of straw there when I last visited (Saturday) so you could be in luck there as well.

Good luck!

**I have a co-worker who has a pair of guinea fowl. I should say *had* a pair, the male died. Does anyone in the Augusta area have Guineas? He'd like to replace with another male seeing as how they were going to let them hatch a few out this year.
