Marcy, are they laying at all? I'm delighted that my girls are using at least one of the new boxes I've offered. It's a dish pan that I just tossed between the perch and the wall of their sun room, so it sits on about a 30 degree angle. Since they've accepted that one, I may add an other if it seems necessary... until the new coop gets built. (10 eggs today. 2 of the Doms are laying, 1 leghorn, and all 4 of the Black sex links, as well as the Pioneer.) I can't get over the beautiful color of the Sex link eggs. Much prettier than the washed out color of the EE eggs. We kind of took today off. Half of the new lawn is seeded... at least the front part. I had to seed it by hand b/c my broadcast spreader has a broken leg at the wheel, and the one I borrowed doesn't work well at all. Hope to get my Dad's pouch spreader for next week.
I got 4 of my comfrey plants tucked into the ground between the Siberian Pea and Elderberry trees. Potted up the other 9, and will tuck pot and all into the garden when i put it to bed.
Harvested some 4' tall lettuce seed heads today. Can't let them stay in the garden like I usually do b/c the girls devour all seeds left behind. Never had to worry about having volunteer lettuce, calendula, dill, parsley, tomatoes, nasturtium before. This year, I didn't have a single calendula come up. On the flower front, I'm daring to plant the more invasive species that I never dared to have before: Coreopsis, 2 varieties. I hear they seed liberally, but birds like the seeds. Bought some raspberry colored echinacea today, and a flat of yellow mums to put around the giant rock that now graces my new side lawn. A couple day lilies should complete that picture.
