Marcy, are they laying at all? I'm delighted that my girls are using at least one of the new boxes I've offered. It's a dish pan that I just tossed between the perch and the wall of their sun room, so it sits on about a 30 degree angle. Since they've accepted that one, I may add an other if it seems necessary... until the new coop gets built. (10 eggs today. 2 of the Doms are laying, 1 leghorn, and all 4 of the Black sex links, as well as the Pioneer.) I can't get over the beautiful color of the Sex link eggs. Much prettier than the washed out color of the EE eggs. We kind of took today off. Half of the new lawn is seeded... at least the front part. I had to seed it by hand b/c my broadcast spreader has a broken leg at the wheel, and the one I borrowed doesn't work well at all. Hope to get my Dad's pouch spreader for next week.

I got 4 of my comfrey plants tucked into the ground between the Siberian Pea and Elderberry trees. Potted up the other 9, and will tuck pot and all into the garden when i put it to bed.

Harvested some 4' tall lettuce seed heads today. Can't let them stay in the garden like I usually do b/c the girls devour all seeds left behind. Never had to worry about having volunteer lettuce, calendula, dill, parsley, tomatoes, nasturtium before. This year, I didn't have a single calendula come up. On the flower front, I'm daring to plant the more invasive species that I never dared to have before: Coreopsis, 2 varieties. I hear they seed liberally, but birds like the seeds. Bought some raspberry colored echinacea today, and a flat of yellow mums to put around the giant rock that now graces my new side lawn. A couple day lilies should complete that picture.

No, no eggs yet. They just turned 20 weeks old, so i imagine it should be pretty soon.

St John's nursery in NY state. I have tried for years to do business with Fedco, cause I prefer to do business and support local, but found that they NEVER had the plants I wanted, and St John's has good variety, similar climate, and better prices. I'd have to go check the tags. I just bought 2 varieties that sounded good so they can cross pollinate. I don't even know if I like Elderberries! But figured that they'd make good jam, and the wild life will like them if I don't. Is beach pea the same as Siberian pea? grows as a small tree/big shrub, has leaves somewhat similar to Ash, yellow pea type blossoms in the spring. My Comfrey has already sprouted leaves!

How do you use your Elderberries, and what do they taste like? I wouldn't know an elderberry if it slapped me across the face!

In addition to jam, I make an elderberry syrup by boiling them down with raw honey for an immune booster and they can be fermented to make wine but the wine is sweeter than I like.

What a beautiful summer and end of summer we've been having. I haven't been online nearly as much and have been spending lots of time outside.

Our first flock seems to be coming of age. They're 18 weeks old now, and I'm starting to notice some subtle and not-so-subtle changes from day to day. For example, I was just sitting on the front step, feeding some stale rye to one of my EE's, and when I accidentally tossed a crumb on her back, she squatted.

My daughter is coming up house hunting from Florida. What a great day for her to be looking around New England! It will be great to have her family closer! She and her husband have two teens and an almost five year old.

No eggs yet, the girls are 21 weeks old today, getting red combs and waddles, they are being lazy just scratching around the yard and under the coop. I am going to give them the last piece of melon today and see what else is in the refrigerator or freezer for them.

The pups just came in for a rest. Besides having nine chicks, I am mom to three mini dachshunds, a schnoodle (poodle/schnauzer), and a 13 week old golden retriever puppy. The puppy is the runt of the litter, my daughter's goldens had seven in June. All the other puppies are over 29 lbs except for our peanut Polly who is only about 12 lbs. She is about the size of our schnoodle Scout. He is the big dog of our pack and doesn't enjoy having a perky little bundle of wild golden puppy bouncing after him. May help him get rid of his "I'm the big dog syndrome".
