Maine

My pekin female duck is still looking for a home.

I'm between Augusta and Waterville.

She lost her mate to a fox on Saturday and is despondent. I was hoping she'd go broody by now but it doesn't look like she's going to. Monday will be my cut off.

She's very healthy, lays daily, well behaved.

I'm so sorry to hear about the losses, CoopChick. We have fox walking through the yard in broad daylight, now with their kits in tow. They are not at all frightened of humans... it is quite frustrating. Since my fox loss last year I haven't let the girls out much at all, even for supervised free-ranging. (I was right there when they took Houdini!) Fortunately, their run is large and covered (I also see a hawk frequently overhead). I do try to keep them entertained by throwing in new stuff in every few days for them to dig at... brush, clippings, stumps, old bedding, etc.

In other news, my one beehive made the winter! It is so good to see the bees flying about and bringing in pollen. Ah, spring! Finally!

Anyone planting yet? I dug an area for the peas today and put in the poles and trellis. My plan was to put in the seeds tomorrow. With the rain storm coming Tuesday, and then cooler temps and showers all week, I'm wondering if the seeds would rot? I hope to at least transplant onions. They'll probably like the rain and cool weather, but I can't decide about the peas......

So sorry, CoopChick, what a horrible thing to come home to, especially when you're sick.
I started seeds in the kitchen that have sprouted fast, too fast. My first year planting is teaching me a lot. I need to buy some bigger planters to switch them over to before they can go outdoors.
We have 4 new chicks indoors, too - 2 SLW and 2 EE, so the race is on to finish a new geodesic dome at the end of the runs to increase range space. Chicken Dome will also give us an area where we can spend more time with them. Standing hunched in their coop is just not cutting it. Pics to come as I get them. I need to get as much done today before the April showers wash us out.

I put in 2/3 of the peas today and 1/3 of the onions. Maybe the rain will hold off long enough to do a little more tomorrow morning. We also have hoop houses and hoop coop that need to be moved off the garden with a tractor assist, and it is too wet to do that now. Luckily, the peas and onions are scheduled to be rotated into the out-of-the way, snowless section of the garden this year.

Thanks VardoChicken & Izzybella! Spent some time raking dry grass & sand around the muddy areas near the pen. I hope it helps with rain that's coming.
