For the past few weeks, the garden's been under attack. Mostly broccoli but more recently, the melons. Suspected deer but the game cam caught nothing. Well, tonight we finally saw the bugger next to the garden while locking down the chickens. A porcupine! Sassy little thing just waddled off slowly as we approached. But now there's only 1 melon left so sadly, I'm ready to claim defeat. Unless someone has a suggestion?
Looking to get my "ducks in a row" for next year's hatching. Any readers have: Dominique? Planning to get Doms? Any readers have Muscovie? Planning to get Muscovie??? Any one breeding Wyandotte?
Took me 5 hours to clean out & whitewash coop floor, shelves & nesting boxes. Had to put tarps down to cover floor as it was still wet in some spots so the girls could go to bed. Got whitewash in my eye painting the last shelf! Blasted myself in the face with the hose as an impromptu eye wash. Bagged up 5 feed bags of dry grass for winter bedding. Raked up a tarp full more of the grass for bagging tomorrow. Got some laundry done. Fed & walked my sister's 3 dogs.
As I was using leaf blower & 3 fans to dry coop, DH comes home and says, I've been gone for 10 hours, is this all you've done all day? ARGGGHHH!!! I'm going to bed!!
It was a good weekend for getting stuff done outside, obviously. Hubby and I cut some firewood from some trees that we felled last weekend. Got about 2 weeks worth put inside, plus a bunch of limbs and trash wood for the HK mound. Finished setting and leveling cinder blocks, poured concrete in them, then started putting up posts for hawk proof run. Got 4 posts done, need to install 3 more, but for the most part, it's a 2 man job, so... I may be at a stand still until next weekend. Made plans to plant some grape vines under the old clothes line frame, and use that for an arbor! Bought daffodils, and will transplant some other plants and some garlic into the new orchard per recommendations for companion planting in Fedco Tree catalog. (Pest and disease control measures)
Porcupine update: no sign of him. Thanks for the suggestions LG & SCG
The dogs have been earning their keep doing their business all around the garden perimeter and along the path my intruder's taking from the treeline. With 3 dogs, urine and poop is in no short supply! With any luck, that garden-wrecker has moved on to greener pastures.
Got plenty done outside today including pulling a ton of invasive knotweed from the yard. Wish the weather would stay like this for awhile - perfect day today!
Sounds like your mighty busy. It sure felt like fall this morning when I got home from work. The girls have been singing the egg song already this morning . I think they like this cooler weather. We got 53 eggs last week . When it was real hot we were only getting about 35 or 40 a week. But of course my pullets are starting to contribute a little now. I've got about 15 pullet eggs so far. Its about time the little sweet hearts started earning their keep. Ha Ha.
