I'm ready for spring, hoping hatching makes it feel like spring, if nothing else, I will have POL pullets in the spring.

Yikes! Spring is a long, long way off. Hopefully the hatching will help, - and at least the days will be getting longer in a couple of weeks (even if it is imperceptible at first!).

Glad to hear the Brahma's are laying well, Speed. I have absolutely no more room for new chickens, but I still plan to hatch around Easter time. I'm going to have to thin out the flock (or start adding on).

only if you plan to take them young, otherwise I'm growing them out and keeping the best.

The light has drastically improved my hens' laying habits. I'm getting 9-12 a day now! Since 13/day was my goal I think I'm doing well. But the people who usually buy them aren't buying them... isn't that the way? No eggs and everyone wants 'em. Eggs galore and I've got to force 'em on people. I also can't believe how much grain I'm going through. I got used to them free-ranging and going through 1 bag every other week. Now we're going through 2 bags a week! Electricity & grain = $ ouch. That's chicken math.

I lived in Maine for a month.. Does that count??? tongue

I think so, but I just moved here in June, so I may not count either. What I lack in longevity, I make up for in enthusiasm. I <3 Maine!

I'm from New England (Mass & N.H.) and lived in Colorado & Wyoming for many, many years. I like winter, I just wish it would snow so I could get out the snow shoes & cross country skis & start breaking our 6 mile path around the house already!
(The man in my life has lived here for 3 years, and I have spent many winter months here with him, too. Fewer summer months - we're bluegrass musicians* & summer is our extra busy time.)

*I know, "bluegrass musician" kind of reads like an oxymoron. When I told my dad I wanted to be a bluegrass musician he looked at me & said, "Sweetie, you can't do both".

Cool. Sounds like you're a good fit then for these cold winters. What instruments do you all play, and are you in a local band or anything? You must travel quite a bit with that gig. A lot of that bluegrass stuff sounds harder to play than some other styles, unless you're talking about spoons or a washboard or something.
