Maine

17 weeks old. That appears to be the age that my cockerels switch from minor disagreements to all-out war.
There are only 6, but they are all going after one bird. I try to ignore their screaming, - mostly they are just chasing and trying to mate each other, and no one has drawn blood.

We were gone for about 3 hours yesterday, late afternoon into early evening, and when I returned home the picked-on cockerel was missing. I found him on the other side of the 9 foot fence in another flock's ranging area. Lucky for him, that flock had gone to bed, because the rooster in there is big.

After much chasing around through scratchy bushes and tangled vines while light was rapidly decreasing, I got him cornered. When he saw my net, I watched him soar over the 9 foot fence back home. A little adrenaline goes a long way I guess, because I watched him try to get over that fence and fail multiple times before I pulled out the net.

I think I'll have to cage this bird. We are going away for a couple nights soon, and I can't ask chicken sitters to spend their evenings out there with a net. I just hope the next lowest in the pecking order doesn't figure out how to scale the fence!

I let my cockrels out to play today. First time they've been out to range in months. If hawk shows up, I hope they are smart enough to hide. Will be a good test for hawk presence and their determination to cull my flock.

Have had to play with dog's electronic collar. The little twerp had figured out that my metal shop blocked the signal just enough that she could go waltzing around the front of the shop and out the driveway into the road. So, I put a fence at back corner, and cut her range back a bit. It was very satisfying to watch her making several unsuccessful trips through that area trying to escape without the zap! She lost this round!!!

Have started working with her again, trying to get her to understand that chickens are not chew toys.

Have you tried having her around the flock yet with the e-collar or are you still in the "getting her used to it" phase of training?

*Best of luck with the flock vs. hawk today!

Our orpingtons gave us our first egg today!!!!!

Mostly thunder here. It poured on and off but within a minute or two of it stopping each time, the ground was dry again.

I hope everyone gets some rain soon....
We got just over a 1/2" yesterday. Haven't checked the rain gauge this morning, but I heard it raining on and off throughout the night. What a relief!
