Hi all, I'm from Portland and have three hens. One is an ex-battery hen named dodo who has a broken beak, one is a Rhode island red named brownie and the other one I don't know the breed but she is white and lays brown eggs and her name is snowball

. I plan on getting three more hens next year when we build a bigger coop and wanted to know if anyone has heard of orchard ridge farm in Gorham. If so, how would you rate them on quality, health of birds ect.?

Welcome, dodochick! I am not familiar with that farm, but that doesn't mean they don't have quality birds. Hopefully someone else in that area knows more.

So, here's my ? of the day: We had heavy hawk predation all spring and summer long. Then, several weeks ago, it was like some one turned off the switch. I've seen some turkey vultures (first for me). But, no hawks. I'm wondering what the rest of you are seeing in the skies over your coops????

They do migrate. This is the first year I haven't had a hawk attack. I've seen relatively few.
yes they do migrate for the winter, we have had hawks around for years even though this is our first year with hens. Watched one pick a robin off the neighbors lawn last year. I know we had 4 around this year and they have moved on for the winter already as well.

I acquired 7 hens that are a few years old from my aunt, she needed to get rid of them. I now need to integrate them in to my flock of orpingtons that are 4 month old, all of the girls from both flocks are about the same size. We set up a make shift pen out of pallets and wire and a large dog crate, we have it about 8 ft a way from the current run so all the girls can see each other. We got them on Sunday and they have calmed down and one have even been laying eggs they are also molting so that is not helping the either with things but all are healthy and well cared for. My wife and I are going to bathe them tomorrow and put them in the coop with the rest of the flock in the evening. I need to take good picks we know we have a Easter egger but unsure on the rest.

It seems early for hawk migration, as IMO, it seems like rodent population and availability should be at it's peak right now. Also, temps warmer than usual right now. We went from having them overhead constantly, up to 5 being seen within a 10 minute time span to none. Wonder what this means for coming weather? Of course there will be hawks passing through from further north, so... risk certainly not over.

Woods, congrats on the new additions. My birds are starting to molt. One looks like she got in a fight with a weed wacker. Their dust bath site is littered with feathers.
