Hey folks,
Just checking in. Trying to Get a Coop together. I have some wood for it already. Really need to get something better than the store bought piece of yuppie junk I have. It does look okay and it was a gift from my wife so I do need to use it. I plan on using it as a honeymoon suite in a larger goop. Got to have it Safe since I know I have Fox running around the area. Scrounging for wood now and hoping I can find a place for 2-4 roosters. Sadly don't have room or money to support that many extra Easter Egger and Black Australorp Roosters. Hoping TSC in Waterville has a swap soon maybe I can get a few hens or ducks in trade.

I have a great recipe for chicken and dumplings.

I also have a good how to on processing birds if that's needed.

LG, yes, I also read that they like fresh kill, especially bloody, and that they always choose live kill if it is available. I think we lucked out with our first catch, - she was a little underweight and maybe she was really hungry. If I had known, I read that you can remove their scent glands and preserve them in glycerin, and that would help trap the next one. Mink is gone for now. I plan to keep the trap set, but it certainly won't have fresh kill everyday.

SCG, what kind of masonry work are you planning? DH built a cinder block chimney for the "shack" we lived in (where the chickens live now). It leaned, and eventually fell down. We had professionals do our masonry heater. We love it, - it really cranks out the heat. Pricey though.

Happy to find the Maine thread!
We recently moved here, and I was wondering where you all usually buy your chicks? TSC? Has anyone ordered any from a local hatchery within the state. We are hoping to order or buy a bunch of Buff Orpington hens. Just looking for ideas and suggestions so i know where to look when we are ready to buy :)

Welcome to Maine, to BYC, and to the Maine thread! A lot of us breed our own chicks. I have an order coming in from Cackle next week, and am expecting a hatch from my own flock on Mon/Tues. To my knowledge, there is not a hatchery in Maine. But, there may be some folks who are breeders. You can check with your local feed stores. Some have a list of what is coming in, and the dates they are expected to arrive. I think Blue Seal does it that way. Tractor Supply is much more random, and breeds are often mixed up in the bins, or mis labeled. Sometimes, it's possible to split an order with someone. There are a lot of Maine members in the Waterville area. I am in the Bangor area, and there are other members in the county, and elsewhere. We often talk at the beginning of the year... to see if there is any order splitting interest. I just bit the bullet, and ordered 25, figuring that I could sell the extras when they come off heat.

Maybe we should list what we have and if we plan on breeding at all?
Myself I Have Easter Eggers and Black Australorps. I bought them all from TSC. The EE's online and the AO's from the local Waterville TSC. I plan on possibly breeding or hatching both breeds as well as a mix for Olive Eggers. That won't be until next year though since mine are still less than 3 months old.
