Maine

Well got a lot of progress on the coop this weekend. Also got eaten up by black flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. Anyway I decided to leave the door open since one got out this morning early. Coop has some high areas not filled in yet. Anyway I got that one back in left the door open and came home to all 6 still inside the blasted coop...

Well I have both flocks out and running in the yard. THe Easter Eggers were thrilled to get out and about. All 8 of them were jumping up and flapping wings like they were happy. The black Australorps have finally started leaving the coop without me having to physically throw them out now. I think they are a bit slow compared to the EE's. For now both groups are staying apart. Although today I saw my white and black splashed 3 near the Australorps.
No fighting between the two groups but I've seen a lot of posturing between the roosters of each group. Turns out one of the black and whites is a slow blooming rooster and has been fighting with Jules often. Way too many roosters so I'll be getting some ready for the dinner table as soon as they get bigger. 5 EE roosters and 3 Hens. ARRRGH!!! does anyone in central Maine have or know of any Easter Egger Pullets that might be for sale? Alternately any older hens anyone wants to retire?

Here's a big laugh for everyone. Here's my largest rooster Heinlein. Heinlein sometimes likes to be picked up and petted. Heinlein also likes walking in the nice green leaved plants behind him. Heinlein's owner knows that plant is Poison Ivy but picked up Heinlein anyway because in 51 years he's never had a reaction to Poison Ivy. This time He did. Poison IVY SUCKS!!!

I'm so very sorry. And I'm not laughing. I spent all morning pulling poison ivy. I acquired quite an impressive pile of the vines. They are currently drying in a trash bag. I was well protected, but... one never knows if "well protected" is protected enough. I also have an impressive pile of laundry to pre-wash before they make it into the regular laundry. Have been showering in liquid Dawn.

Before I had a chance to clean up, I spied a mangy looking raccoon strolling across the front side lawn. Sent hubby for the shot gun. It was a nursing female, very big, and she had a snoot full of quills, as well as quills across her chest, and a few on her back. She also smelled quite skunky. Now, I'm wondering what would cause a coon to tangle with a porky??? Our neighbor showed up as I was dragging the coon out of the woods, and she said there was a huge porcupine headed our way. Hubby was ready for it, but it never showed up.

Anyone have fresh baby chicks they'd let me buy one of? Have a broody turkey since probably Septemberish.
She's not giving up. She's beat me.

I assume you have fertile eggs, but if not and you want some just give a holler, got them coming out the ears.

Speaking of ears, anyone in central measure soil temps yet? Assuming its well behind schedule. Has taken 2+ weeks to sprout melon starts in the hoop house.

Have tried the fertile egg route for quite some time. Was hoping she'd just eventually hatch something. Unfortunately other birds just continue to deposit eggs and filth in there. And she's so nasty you can't reach in there. She has 2 nests, also, one that is manned by her and one that's manned by her broody chicken friends. I let both nests go hoping that if anyone hatched chicks she could have one. No one has and two days ago I cleaned that auxiliary nest out, and boy did it stink. 42 eggs!
Just hoping to get one chick.
Nothing in the ground here, yet, and melon/pumpkin seeds just starting to sprout in my basement.

No chicks here this year. Taking a year off, and while I miss hatching, I do not miss having a bachelor pen!

I'm a little behind on the garden. The corn, melon, squash hoop house is about half weeded. The tomato, pepper, eggplant house is almost all planted and looking pretty good. Transplanted a bunch of brassicas out this weekend, direct seeded beans.

It seems to be a heavier than usual blackfly season and I had to break down and don my bug hat. It works, but makes me feel like I am blind.

I thought we were supposed to get "alerts" when people posted in subscribed threads....
