Maine

you'll probably have to set up a heat lamp. most broodies won't take babies, only eggs. and some will kill babies that are not hatched under them so be careful.
Anyone in Southern Maine have a broody they are willing to part with? I have ducklings and goslings arriving over the next two weeks and Dominique eggs going on lockdown the end of next week. If I can get some help brooding the Dominiques - I'll take it! I'm not picky on breed just need a good and serious mama. Please pm me. Thanks!

who told you have have to check on them every hour? I don't, make sure they have food and water and check every few hours.
My first chicks are here! 1/3 of the order arrived-- just the Brahmas. I guess the others didn't ship. So so cute! I'm very worried I might kill them out of ignorance. I think I am doing it right but didn't but the fancy multi-hole feeder and wish I had. I laughed when they started a "keep away" with a large piece of crumble. So young to do that. Do I really have to check on them every hour round the clock for the first week?? I really hope my others come soon. (I ordered Silver Laced dottes and a few more Ameraucanas.) I can't wait to have them 'like' me.

I need to get more Brahmas someday. I only have one, but she has a big personality and was very entertaining as a chick. I like the look of big chickens.

Enjoyed the biker chicks, pollyc, and bwockbwock's story was quite entertaining.

I have my first broody of the season. Last summer, I had all kinds of broodies, even my leghorn. I didn't want to hatch, so I just pulled them off the nest twice a day (tried the cage with wire floor and air circulation but that didn't work at all), and eventually they gave up. One hen sat for 2 months. Anyway, while they didn't like to be moved, It wasn't such a big deal to work around them.

This year, the broody is an olive-egger that I didn't have last year. If I go near her, she becomes a viscous snarling dog and will readily draw blood. I have to wear very thick gloves to take her out of the nest, and she tucks eggs under her wings forcing me to frisk her each day.

I have two broodys right now, both first timers less than a year old. One is in a cat litter box with cover and the other in a nest box. One is vicious and the other I don't have any problems, I pat her goodnight every night when I lock them in. I have to move her soon though and haven't figured out what I am gonna do to seperate her from the rest of the birds.

We are up to 7 little chickies hatched :) I am pretty please so far. Last time I had leg issues from the very first chick out. This time none seem to have leg trouble.

On a completely non-chicken note, I just FINALLY got to see The Muppet Movie (the most recent one) and I LOVED it!!!! You should all see it :)

He's not a chicken, but this Easter castaway just came into my family.

Don't worry, I know he is too little for that much carrot.
My neighbor volunteers at a horse rescue. They have been flooded with other animals lately - 16 chickens, an emu, and a goose, plus my little guy.
Apparently he was an Easter impulse purchase & the owners were already tired of him.
He is quite charming, and is settling in nicely in his new house by my bed.

It is so funny, because I have really been wanting an English Angora again, but hoped to rescue one. When my neighbor knocked on my door on Tuesday I was not expecting this surprise.

After the last few weeks of trials & tribulations out here on the homestead, I am one happy gal tonight.

If you don't have room to section off part of the coop, SCG made some kind of screen front to the nestbox and just let the broody out once or twice a day to do her business.

Enjoy your new rabbit, m,kitchengirl. SCG,- did you notice she slipped in that comment about an emu at the rescue shelter? ;)

I did notice. But I just hatched 3 turkeys and 2 more chicks... I'm ok... for now. Too many animals. I'm only at 89 poultry right now, though.

The nestbox screen is pretty simple if you have a regular nestbox...

Just measure the opening, make a small box out of wood that has the same dimensions, fill with wire to protect the broody, use shims to keep it in place, and voila! Broody protection.

Congrats on your bunny, kitchengirl!

I haven't been around to keep up with this thread lately. I feel so behind! Anyone got anything for sale? My addiction is in full swing this spring! LOL

Had a bad time last month with a much-wanted box of peeps that I pre-ordered back in December to make sure I got the breeds + date I wanted. Beautiful babies including buff laced Polish, Sumatras, bc marans, faverolles, appenzeller spitzhaubens, etc. Every last one was dead as a doornail. My postlady was crying. :( It was horrible. I'd never had a shipment arrive dead like that before. One or two casualties, yes, but never that.

They sent me replacements two weeks later, a bunch of stuff that I didn't particularly want (since they were sold out of some of the rare breeds) but I did get two sumatras and three Faverolles out of it so I guess I'm happy. But I can't help wanting a few Polish and Russian Orloffs!

Also looking for a couple guineas hens or keets (age not important) and a couple turkey poults (youngish, preferably, and a breed whose legs won't give out on it in a year or two, as I'm just looking for pet turkeys, not for the table... I know, I'm crazy!)

wow, lots going on today. love that bunny, glad it's yours and not mine though. SCG, love your coop sign, lol.
