Maine

I was afraid I'd be outed as a hippy if I mentioned Arnica in here so I PMd Hoppy... then I read on. Phew. Hippy chicks in here! LOL.

Arnica gel is okay but quicker turn around from Arnica tablets which are taken sublingually-- under the tongue!!! Let them melt. The large veins under your tongue absorb it and voila! No, Tylenol is not anati inflammatory.

While on the herbal bit: I have Jerusalem Artichokes for my chickens. I know they eat a lot of things. I will grow sunflowers and buckwheat. Any Perrennials that people know their birds love??

Hello there..I am from maine and I am looking for anyone who is selling Frizzel chicks..looking for female and color does not matter...the age really does not matter but would prefer under a year...any ideas as to where I would find any for sale? Any information would be great!

you mean like this? I seem to have a waiting list on them and hopefully in the next 2 weeks I actually will have some hatch. had a rooster issue so moved the girls into a pen with a different roo. mine are sizzles (frizzled silkies)

Maybe SCG can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe Tylenol is an anti-inflammatory. If you can tolerate ibuprofen or aspirin, that will take down the swelling, as well as eliminated pain.
Good luck, and hope your are back on your feet soon!

You're right Bucka, acetaminophen/Tylenol is only a pain/fever reducer. It has no anti-inflammatory actions. But naproxen does all 3. You can still take acetaminophen with the naproxen for extra pain relief, but you want to stick to naproxen around the clock for the swelling.

I am soo upset that I cant make the swap in Waterville on Sunday but family comes first! I am picking up 3 guinea pigs in Auburn most likely as well as another guinea pig! Can't wait! I might also be getting a few rabbits including a mis marked so cant be shown dwarf Hotot buck to go with my Netherland dwarf doe rabbit! I should be at the Skowhegan swap on the 19th, and if they decide to have it; the wilton swap on the 20th.. Hope everybody who is going to Waterville does good!

I did the naproxen last night and good news, swelling this morning is down. but I expect since I accidently hit my ankle on a wood pallet, it maybe swelling again. have so much to do today but I know if I want to go to the waterville swap I need to rest it one more day. birds will have to wait, tomorrow is another day and I will get it done then.

Its looking like you all are going to have some great weather for the swaps this weekend! I am a bit disappointed that I cant make it to either, but I am sure I will make it to a swap EVENTUALLY! I have a bunch of little chickies that will be grown enough to sell before too long and if I intend to get a couple of JG's, Breda, and Cochins I have to think the ranks now. Its just so hard when they are so cute and tiny. And these are the first we have hatched from our own eggs, so I kinda feel even more attached to them.

Hoppy, I believe that if you had to hurt your ankle, this is the perfect weekend to do it. Just think, Mother's Day+Hurt ankle= extra spoiling. MILK IT HOPPY!!!!!

Exactly!!! And then you can get someone to come to the swap with you:

"You know, I love you so much. It is such a wonderful thing to be your mother- to give you life, to feed you, clothe you, care for you when you are sick, make sure you get to school/extra curriculars etc on time, clean up after you, wash your laundry etc etc etc. By the way, did you know it is Mothers Day on Sunday? Wouldnt it be great to spend it together somewhere? HEY! There is a swap in Waterville that day! It would make me so very happy if you would come and spend the day with me and it would mean the world to me if you would help me out since I hurt my ankle while trying to stay physically healthy to make sure that I will be around to care for you and love you for years to come even after you are married and have children of your own..."

We're thinking about the swaps that are coming up, but I'm more interested in adding some lambs than adding more chickens right now... we're up nearer to Rangeley but do all of our shopping and stuff in Farmington, so the Wilton swap is our best bet. Anyone know of anyone with some nice lambs headed for that one?
As for insulating, we kept our flock in the open ended hoop house for the winter with a heater under their water dish. They did fine and free ranged happily inside and out all through the cold. Didn't lose a single chicken, no one even had a frostbitten comb and they only stopped laying for a couple weeks right in the middle. Plus they fertilized and scratched up the dirt in the hoop house for better spring planting! Now we've moved them into the barn to give all my baby garden plants a chance to grow without being eaten or scratched up by the hens.
